The Republic is supposed to be a VOLUNTARY UNION of States. Either it IS voluntary, in which participation is intentional and self-governance is upheld, or it is NOT voluntary and the Constitution is null. Lincoln proved that, once and for all, the participation is NOT voluntary, it is utterly compelled, which to the South meant they were not free and justified to secede, after trying to resolve the differences within the federal legislature and official means.
