Feds: Illegal Alien Attacked Female Jogger After Being Freed from Jail
Julio Andres Gonzalez-Palacios, a 23-year-old illegal alien from Guatemala, was in Denver Police Department custody on July 9 after being arrested and charged with assault and burglary.
ICE officials said they placed a detainer on Gonzalez-Palacios on July 10, requesting that he be held in local custody until federal immigration agents could transfer him into their custody. The Denver Police Department said they notified ICE three and half hours before Gonzalez-Palaciosâ release.
The heads-up, though, was not enough time for ICE agents to take Gonzalez-Palacios into their custody, and he was freed into the general public. Coloradoâs sanctuary state policy prohibits law enforcement from holding a suspect for ICE.
The next day, on July 11, Gonzalez-Palacios allegedly attacked a female jogger with a board. The woman has been seriously injured and is still recovering in the hospital. Gonzalez-Palacios was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
âThis was a completely preventable crime,â Colorado ICE official John Fabbricatore said in a statement. âGonzalez-Palacios could have been safely transferred to ICE custody and he may have been removed from the country, but due to Coloradoâs misguided sanctuary law, law enforcement agencies are no longer able to work with us to keep repeat offenders off the streets.â
According to ICE, Gonzalez-Palacios has been convicted of multiple crimes in Denver since 2017, including theft, assault, failure to appear in court, and trespassing.
Gonzalez-Palacios first entered the United States on a B visa, meant for temporary visitors. He was supposed to leave the U.S. by June 4, 2017, but instead has remained illegally present in the country.
Gonzalez-Palacios is currently being held at the Arapahoe County Jail. ICE officials have again placed a detainer on the illegal alien, requesting he be turned over to their custody if released at any time.
Last year, Colorado officials freed an illegal alien from Cuba who went on to be arrested less than a month later for attempted murder.

Pelosi: âWhether He Knows It Yet or Notâ Trump Will Be Leaving the White House â Even If He âHas to Be Fumigatedâ
âThe fact is whether he knows it yet or not, he will be leaving,â Pelosi told Brzezinski. âJust because he might not want to move out of the White House doesnât mean we wonât have an inauguration ceremony to inauguration a duly elected President of the United States. And you know, Iâm second in line to the presidency just last week I had my regular continuation of government briefing. This might interest you because I say to them, this is never going to happen, God willing it never will, but there is a process. It has nothing to do with the certain occupant of the White House doesnât feel like moving and has to be fumigated out of there because the presidency is the presidency. Itâs not geography or location so, so much for him. I wouldnât spend so much time on it thatâs a victory for him because then weâre not talking about your first, more important subject, which is, what are we going to do to stop this vicious virus that is making an assault on our health, again, our lives, our livelihood and life of our democracy.â

Homeland Security sending 150 agents to Chicago this week: report
The Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents are set to assist other federal law enforcement and Chicago police in crime-fighting efforts, the Tribune reported citing unnamed sources.
A specific plan on what the agents will be doing has not been made public, according to the Tribune. One city official told the newspaper that the city was aware of the plan but not any specifics.
The move would come as Democratic leaders have condemned the Trump administration for sending federal officials to Portland, Ore., where there have been reports of people being picked up by agents in unmarked vans.
Acting Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Ken Cuccinelli on Monday said the efforts in Portland could be extended to other cities if there are spikes in violent protests.
One Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official in Chicago confirmed the deployment to the Tribune. The official said the HSI agents, who are part of ICE, would not be involved in immigration or deportation matters.
A DHS official was not immediately available for comment when contacted by The Hill.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) and President Trump have publicly feuded recently, with each blaming the other for violence in the city. Trump sent a letter last month to Lightfoot and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) accusing the Democrats of failing the city amid a string of violent incidents in Chicago.
Lightfoot said last week on MSNBC that gun violence in her city is a direct result of Trumpâs failure to take action on gun reform legislation.
âIf you go back over many years President Trump has said a lot of disparaging things about the city of Chicago. He likes to use us as a political punching bag,â Lightfoot said. âBut if the president was really committed to helping us deal with our violence he would do some easy things.â
Democrats have widely condemned President Trump and his administration for sending federal law enforcement officials to U.S. cities amid protests.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) said Sunday the presence of federal law enforcement is leading to more violence in the city and called for their removal.
âThey are not helping us, they are hurting us. They are escalating an already dangerous situation,â Wheeler said on CNNâs âState of the Union." âAnd what I want to do is raise awareness nationally. This could happen in your city, and what weâre seeing is a blatant abuse of police tactics by the federal government, by a Trump administration that's falling in the polls, and this is a direct threat to our democracy.â
