WEST HAVEN — University of New Haven police Sgt. Luis Dos Santos was honored by the United States Attorney’s Office recently for his community policing initiatives, according to Chief of Police Tracy L. Mooney.

Mooney nominated Dos Santos “for his leadership and his excellence in community outreach,” she said in a news release.

United States Attorney John H. Durham presented the award to Dos Santos on Oct. 30.

“Sergeant Dos Santos has become an overall role model and mentor for the university’s student population,” Mooney said. “His interventions and educational presentations have mitigated many small problems before they become major issues.
