Trump administration adds 11 companies to sanctions list over Uighur oppression, including suppliers for US firms

Sanctions represent another step in heightened pressure on Chinese government

Tyler OlsonJuly 21, 2020

The Trump administration on Monday slapped sanctions on 11 Chinese firms over their use of forced labor and other forms of repression against the Uighur Muslims, an ethnic minority in China, including some with documented relationships with American companies.

The sanctions represent another step by the administration in its heightened pressure on the Chinese government in recent months.

The Commerce Department announced that those firms would be put on the "Entity List," an index of companies that are believed to be engaged in "activities contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States." According to the Commerce Department, these activities are not just limited to forced labor, but also include DNA collection.

POMPEO, STATE DEPARTMENT SHARPEN CRITICISM OF CHINA ON VIRUS AND HUMAN RiGHTS ABUSES

"Beijing actively promotes the reprehensible practice of forced labor and abusive DNA collection and analysis schemes to repress its citizens," Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement. “This action will ensure that our goods and technologies are not used in the Chinese Communist Party’s despicable offensive against defenseless Muslim minority populations."

A study from this March by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, which is run by the Australian government, named a number of companies now placed on the Entity List. The New York Times also reported on the Australian Strategic Policy Institute study.

Nanchang O-Film Tech, for example, supplies Apple, HP, GM, Amazon and Microsoft, among others, according to the report. Nanjing Synergy Textiles Co. Ltd. is owned by Victory City International Holding Ltd., which supplies Calvin Klein and North Face. Changji Esquel Textile supplies Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Land's End, Patagonia, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger and others.

The other companies listed include: Hefei Bitland Information Technology Co. Ltd.; Hefei Meiling Co. Ltd.; Hetian Haolin Hair Accessories Co. Ltd.; Hetian Taida Apparel Co., Ltd.; KTK Group; Tanyuan Technology Co. Ltd.; Xinjiang Silk Road BGI; and Beijing Liuhe BGI.

The new sanctions from the Trump administration come as it has taken a tough stance on China in recent months, especially since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. The State Department and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in particular, have attacked China for withholding information about the coronavirus, committing "the stain of the century" of human rights violations in its oppression of the Uighurs and over its new "national security" law that tightens Beijing's grip on Hong Kong.

Exclusive — John Solomon & Seamus Bruner: Vice President Joe Biden Helped Sweep Russian Spy Ring Under the Rug

Obama’s advisors were divided. On one side were CIA Director Leon Panetta and FBI Director Robert Mueller. Panetta wanted to rescue their informant, a Russian asset who had exposed the domestic spy ring, and Mueller wanted to arrest the Russian sleeper agents. On the other side were the White House and the State Department, who wanted to keep the whole thing quiet.

Vice President Joe Biden, National Security Advisor Tom Donilon, and the “diplomatic players” agreed with the president. Biden and Donilon strongly argued in favor of sweeping the illegal spy ring under the rug. Without a hint of irony, Biden said, “Our national security interest balance tips heavily to not creating a flap.” Obama’s top officials apparently believed that bowing to Russia was in the best interests of U.S. national security and that punishing Russian spies would “blow up the relationship.”

Everyone agreed that busting the spy ring would blindside Medvedev, who was set to meet with Obama within days. But ignoring the spies or even letting them off the hook presented a dilemma in itself. Defense Secretary Robert Gates offered a solution: meet privately with Medvedev and reveal the real names and ranks of the nearly one dozen Russian spies and demand that they be recalled to Russia quietly and immediately. Obama did not want to embarrass Medvedev and agreed to Gates’ soft-touch proposal.

After Obama left the situation room, the advisors deliberated a bit more and agreed that the plan would still put Medvedev in a tight spot. They decided that it was probably best to quietly “exfiltrate” their informant and deport the Russian agents without informing Medvedev. That way everyone was happy.

On June 27, 2010, ten of the Russian spies were quietly rounded up and deported. They returned to Russia in exchange for four Russian prisoners accused of spying for the West. It was a lopsided trade to say the least, particularly because the U.S. was unable to secure the release of a single American prisoner.

Meanwhile, the Russian illegals, including the notorious femme fatale Anna Chapman, returned to Russia and Putin gave them a hero’s welcome. Then, in October, the spies were awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland—Russia’s highest award—by President Medvedev.

Putin’s welcome home party for the agents was a direct slap in the face to the United States. Obama was desperately trying to downplay the threat they had posed, yet the Russian president gave them a very public national award ceremony. Putin even issued a thinly veiled threat to the FBI and CIA’s informant (and any potential co-informants). “It was the result of treason,” Putin said of whoever was responsible. “It always ends badly for traitors: as a rule, their end comes from drink or drugs, lying in a ditch. And for what?”

Putin’s statement was essentially a promise of retaliation against the informant(s). In fact, as more Russian officials began to die under mysterious circumstances, the word “Putincide” became the unofficial term for such deaths among U.S. intelligence circles.

In sum, the Russian reset was clearly a joke to Putin, and for obvious reasons. To him, Obama’s weakness was on full display, and Hillary (and Bill) Clinton’s own vulnerabilities would one day be exploited.

Greta Thunberg Wins 1 Million Euro ‘Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity

The freak gets more money

Climate icon Greta Thunberg has taken yet another prize for her woke climate activism, banking the one million euro Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity for her “contributions to mitigation and adaptation to climate change.”

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was established in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1956 “to improve the quality of life through art, charity, science and education” but 2020 marks its first ever Prize for Humanity, an award created to stimulate climate change activism.

According to its website, the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity “distinguishes innovative pathways with high impact potential to assist in processes of mitigation and/or adaptation to climate change, one of the greatest threats to this century and with devastating consequences for the well-being of current and future generations and for the economy and our natural ecosystems.”

The foundation shares the widespread conviction that humanity “is facing an unprecedented climate crisis,” which is “clearly visible in the ever-increasing frequency of heat waves and droughts, the rise in seawater temperatures, melting glaciers and extreme weather events.”

The 17-year-old Ms. Thunberg was already named Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year” for 2019, joining a series of notable figures including Adolf Hitler (1938), Joseph Stalin (1939), and Ayatollah Khomeini (1979). Thunberg was launched into the public limelight thanks to her Fridays for Future movement, whereby students are encouraged to skip school every Friday in order to protest climate change.

Thunberg also received broad acclaim from the international Left for her public scolding of world leaders at the United Nations last September.

“You have stolen my dreams, my childhood, with your empty words and yet I’m one of the lucky ones,” Thunberg said at the U.N. General Assembly. “People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you?”

She also testified before congress:

Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile Shut Down Trump Campaign Texting Program

Anons we might heating “My Fellow Americans the storm is upon us“ very soon

Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile temporarily shut down President Donald Trump’s campaign texting program, which serves as a cornerstone of the president’s digital platform.

Politico reported on Monday that Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T flagged “potential regulatory problems” with the Trump campaign’s messaging operation. Within “Trump’s orbit,” many continue to speculate that big tech companies “are looking to influence the election” against the president.

Trump recently accused Twitter and Facebook of censoring conservatives, and Donald Trump Jr., Trump’s son, contended that Google’s Gmail platform is sending Trump campaign emails to voters’ spam folders.

Republican operatives have said that email and text messaging lists are some of the most vital parts of a campaign apparatus.

Eric Wilson, a GOP digital strategist who worked for the Marco Rubio 2016 presidential campaign, said, “A campaign’s email and text messaging list are some of the most important assets they have in 2020.”

He added that it was “really very concerning to see that such a significant issue happened and to see that it wasn’t resolved in a timely manner.”

Politico reported that the decision was allegedly not made by Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T to cancel the president’s messaging platform; instead, the companies contend that third-party administrators that monitor their text messaging services blocked the campaign messages. The administrators insist that they were following the guidelines established by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry (CTI). The major telecoms shut down the Trump campaign’s messaging during a test run on the Fourth of July, potentially costing the campaign a large number of donations from supporters.

The Cellular Telecommunications Industry, which represents mobile phone groups, did not say why they blocked the president’s messaging service, but said in a statement, “We expect all senders — whether airlines, schools, banks or campaigns — to include clear opt-out language and gain prior consent before sending a text.”

“These simple steps help protect consumers from spam and maintain text messaging as a trusted medium for everyone,” the group added.

Gary Toby, the Trump campaign’s digital director emphasized how important its messaging services is for getting out the vote ahead of elections. He said:

Peer-to-peer texting has quickly become a critical tool for Republicans and Democrats. Both sides agree, it’s going to lead to more Americans voting, a great thing for our country. There is bipartisan commitment to continue working with mobile carriers and the entire mobile messaging industry to ensure the channel remains open and secure.

Tim Cameron, a digital strategist who worked for the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), said, “I understand that telecom might want to change the rules about how political campaigns operate on their platforms.” He added, “But those changes should take place after the election, and once they’re in place when you’re in a period just a few months before the election, it’s not the time to change them.”

It's Official: Trump Gets the WH Budget Czar That Democrats Hate

Well, it’s official. Last night, the Senate confirmed Russell Vought as the new director for the White House Office of Management and Budget. He’s been the acting director since March. Of course, Democrats hate him. He had a role in the failed Trump-Ukraine impeachment fiasco that ended in total defeat for the Democrats. He dared to cut social programs, boosted funds for defense, and—gasp!—wanted more tax cuts. Oh, the humanity! Yet, we all know why Democrats threw a tantrum. Trump nominated him (via WSJ):

Senators voted 51 to 45 along party lines to confirm Mr. Vought’s nomination by President Trump.

Democrats had voiced strong opposition to the choice of Mr. Vought to head the agency, citing questions about his role in holding up U.S. security aid to Ukraine and his crafting of White House budgets that prioritized spending and tax cuts.

The 500-person agency produces the president’s annual budget proposal, manages federal property and assesses the quality of government programs.

Mr. Vought aroused the ire of Democrats in January, when he released a $4.8 trillion budget that proposed steep reductions in social-safety-net programs and foreign aid and higher outlays for defense and veterans. In May, his office broke the longstanding practice of issuing updated economic forecasts, citing uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr. Vought has served in high-level positions at OMB since early in Mr. Trump’s presidency. He previously worked at Heritage Action for America, the lobbying arm of the conservative Washington think tank. Vice President Mike Pence cast a tie-breaking vote for the Senate to confirm Mr. Vought’s 2018 nomination as deputy director.

It’s a double-edged sword. Yes, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime honor to be nominated by the president to do a job, yet it also paints a target on your back for Democrats and their ‘woke’ allies in the liberal media who are no longer queasy about doxxing their enemies. Congratulations to Mr. Vought, the fact that Democrats hate you makes me root for you even harder.

ICYMI: A Rolling Stone Editor Slapped Liberal America Across Her Face Over Anti-Intellectual Antics Over Trump

Taibbi also notes at the other narrative that’s been manufactured: the media’s mobilization against the nation’s founding as some white nationalist project. To start anew, the elites have decided to ensure to create a climate of crisis in which only their first-class expertise could resolve—and if that means trashing America and going along with lefty nutjobs then so be it? At the same time, the whole piece is underlined with the irony of this whole lefty tantrum: a lot of its success is grounded over the fact that elite corporatism has latched onto it (via Matt Taibbi):

It’s tragic that this even needs saying, but the sudden reinvention in the press of modern America as a Nazi apartheid state is as phony as the thousands of patriotic campaigns that occupied the news media previously. We’re witnessing an obscene malfunction of the elite messaging system.

The people who run this country have run out of workable myths with which to distract the public, and in a moment of extreme crisis have chosen to stoke civil war and defame the rest of us – black and white – rather than admit to a generation of corruption, betrayal, and mismanagement.

I saw the first hints of this crackup in the panicked conversations of campaign reporters four summers ago. Colleagues in news media had always reveled in the power to police the boundaries of national politics.

[…]

Unfortunately, voters had other problems. By 2016 Americans had lived for a generation under an economic model dominated by huge transnational companies that sold weapons into holocausts of urban violence, rejoiced in addiction to opiates or carcinogens as a revenue model, bled virtually all the savings of the American middle class (targeting minorities especially) through a succession of speculative bubble schemes, and relentlessly lobbied to be exempted from taxes, environmental laws, criminal penalties, and even their own business errors, through bailouts approved by the “politicians” they sponsored in both parties.

[…]

When the election of Trump made a solid first attempt at answering that question, establishment figures howled in self-pity and outrage. Who but deplorable racists could hate us this much? Those were the first gusts hinting at the current hurricane of stupidity.

[…]

Papers like the New York Times did post-mortems citing research that concluded things like “how trade affected personal finances had little bearing on political preferences,” while “unemployment or the density of manufacturing jobs in one’s area” were similarly irrelevant. The same pundits who chanted “It’s the economy, stupid,” throughout the nineties reversed tune.

[…]

The press from January 2017 on presented a basically unbroken succession of terrors and manias, whose purpose was the psychological expunging of the insult to aristocratic America that was Trump’s Napoleonic occupation of the White House.

Everything was a maximum-level emergency. When Trump was too chummy with Putin in Helsinki, it was literal treason (“A historic moment in the entire history of the United States,” was the redundant gasp of Thomas Friedman). The administration’s admittedly grotesque decision to expand separations of detained immigrant children from their parents – a policy not terribly far off from that of George Bush or Barack Obama, but still – became “Trump’s Concentration Camps.” Trump’s phone call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was an attack on “democracy itself.” In this reporting era, a cigar was never just a cigar; all things had to be unthinkable historical evils.

[…]

As journalism, 1619 read almost exactly like the paper’s post-mortems on the 2016 election – probably not an accident, since Baquet told us it was conceived identically as an effort to “understand the forces that led to the election of Donald Trump.” In both cases history was reduced to a simplistic showdown between evil racists and oppressed peoples.

The best explanation for these sudden reversals in rhetoric is that Trump broke the brains of America’s educated classes. Like Russian aristocrats who spent the last days of the Tsarist empire flocking to fortune-tellers and mystics, upscale blue-staters have lost themselves lately in quasi-religious tracts like White Fragility, and are lining up to flog themselves for personal and historical sins.

In desperation to help the country atone for their idea of why Trump happened, they’ve engaged in a sort of moon landing of anti-intellectual endeavors, committing a generation of minds to finding a solution to the one thing no thinking person ever considered a problem, i.e. the Enlightenment ideas that led to the American Revolution.
