Egypt's Parliament Approves Ground Troop Deployment To Back Haftar In Libya

Libya's proxy war just grew hotter, with outside powers supporting opposite sides of the conflict finding themselves more directly intervening on Libyan soil.

Though Turkey, which supports Tripoli's UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) has sent troops and weapons since last year to help fend off Haftar's (now failed) advance on the capital, Egypt just made a huge and unprecedented move.

On Monday Egypt's parliament voted to approve sending its armed forces to fight “criminal militias” and “foreign terrorist groups” on a “Western front”. Previously Egypt has only flown sorties over neighboring Libya, however, this would mark the first ever direct ground intervention.

Though the parliamentary vote didn't name Libya directly, it's widely known that "Western front" is a clear reference to the growing chaos along Egypt's border with Libya. Cairo continues to see Haftar as a necessary 'stabilizer' for the country which has remained in a state of chaos and bloodshet since the US-NATO toppling of Gaddafi in 2011.

The parliament unanimously voted for "the deployment of members of the Egyptian armed forces on combat missions outside Egypt's borders to defend Egyptian national security… against criminal armed militias and foreign terrorist elements," according to a statement.

Reuters underscores that the vote is a big deal and somewhat unprecedented:

Egyptian state TV later ran banners on the screen saying: “Egypt and Libya, one people, one fate.”

The last time Egypt sent ground troops abroad for combat was in 1991 in Kuwait as part of a U.S.-led coalition to drive out Iraqi troops.

Regional media has even speculated of late that Turkey and Egypt are fast stumbling toward war inside Libya.

Indeed Monday's parliamentary approval for Sisi's Libya policy brings the two major regional players much closer to direct clash.

Ghislaine Maxwell Hamstrung By Her Own 2016 Testimony, While Ex-Friend Claims She Hired Provocateur Jacob Wohl To Smear Accusers

In July of 2016, Ghislaine Maxwell spent two days with a group of attorneys in a midtown Manhattan law office and described her role in Jeffrey Epstein's life - claiming that "A very small part of my job was from time to time to find adult professional massage therapists for Jeffrey." Her testimony was obtained as part of a now-settled defamation lawsuit brought by accuser Virginia Giuffre, who claims both Epstein and Maxwell sexually abused her.

“My job included hiring many people” including cooks, gardeners, pilots, assistants and cleaners for his six homes, Maxwell said in a deposition. “A very small part of my job was from time to time to find adult professional massage therapists for Jeffrey.” -Bloomberg

Now, prosecutors allege Ghislaine lied nine times during the deposition, according to Bloomberg. According to an indictment against the now-jailed Maxwell unsealed on July 2, Maxwell lied when she denied knowing anything about Epstein's recruitment of underage girls, as well as the dead pedophile's interactions with underage girls at his properties around the globe.

Israeli farmers sue the military over its Iron Dome air defense system, alleging ‘radiation exposure’ and a ‘land grab’

The Iron Dome intended to protect Israel from Hamas missiles launched sporadically from the Gaza Strip has led to a lawsuit by farmers, who say they’ve suffered from its radiation and from ‘occupation’ of their agricultural lands.

The Iron Dome anti-missile system was set up near a collective farm, or kibbutz, in 2012. The exact location of the farm somewhere in the Negev desert has not been revealed.

Now people living in the kibbutz are demanding monetary compensation from IDF for exposure to “very strong” radiation from the anti-missile radars.

The IDF informed the local residents about hazards only six years after setting the battery up. It warned the farmers not to approach the fields near the area. Until then, the farmers say, they’d worked on their fields unaware of any risk.

“The defendant only recently remembered to update the kibbutz about the very strong radiation the system emits, and that it is therefore strictly forbidden to engage in any agriculture work in the surrounding area,” the lawsuit states.

The residents of the kibbutz are seeking compensation of NIS4.5 million (over $1,3 million) for damage to their health as well as for alleged disruption of the agricultural systems in the area of 2.5 acres occupied by the Iron Dome unit.

For comparison, one Iron Dome unit costs around $100 million and the IDF currently operates ten of them, with five more planned.

Since Iron Dome was employed by the IDF in 2011, it has intercepted over 1,500 targets.

Disney fires high-level ABC News exec after she reportedly made racist remarks about black employees

Not a good look

Disney fired top ABC News executive Barbara Fedida after she reportedly made racist remarks about the company's black employees earlier in the year.

The company placed Fedida on administrative leave in June pending an investigation into reports that Fedida had a lengthy history of making racially insensitive remarks, was difficult, and was hard on employees.

While employed by the company, Fedida was senior vice president of talent, editorial strategy, and business affairs for the network.

What are the details?

On Monday, Walt Disney Television Chairman and Disney Media Networks co-chairman Peter Rice announced Fedida's departure.

In a memo, Rice said, "The investigation substantiated that Ms. Fedida did make some of the unacceptable racially insensitive comments attributed to her. It also substantiated that Ms. Fedida managed in a rough manner, and, on occasion, used crass and inappropriate language."

"Lastly," Rice's memo added, "the investigation found no basis for the claims that Ms. Fedida was the subject of dozens of HR complaints and that ABC News spent millions of dollars in confidential settlements related to Ms. Fedida, as alleged in some press accounts."

The memo concluded, "Although Ms. Fedida made contributions to the organization over the 20-year span of her career, in light of the overall findings, we have determined that she can no longer serve in a leadership role and will not be returning to ABC News."

Fedida reportedly made remarks about "Good Morning America" host Robin Roberts' contract renewal in 2018, asking "what more Roberts could want and said it wasn't as if the network was asking Roberts to 'pick cotton.'"

Fedida also reportedly said that Sunny Hostin — co-host on "The View" — was "low rent."

Last month, former CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien tweeted in response to the reports, said that a "CNN exec" engaged in offensive behaviors, and insisted that exec would only book the "right kind" of black people on O'Brien's show.

You can read more on the allegations against Fedida in a lengthy report here.

A June statement from Fedida said:

Throughout my career, I have been a champion for increased diversity in network news. Building a news division where everyone can thrive has been my life's mission. I am proud of my decades of work of hiring, supporting and promoting talented journalists of color. And, unlike these heartbreaking and incredibly misleading claims about me, that track record is well-documented and undeniable.

Facebook suspends anti-mask group that branded face coverings a form of ‘enslavement’

A Facebook group called ‘Unmasking America’ which claimed that masks were a “psychological anchor for suppression” has been suspended by the social media platform under its coronavirus misinformation policies.

“Here to speak the TRUTH about masks!” read the ‘about’ page of Unmasking America. It was just one of many groups on Facebook posting messages decrying mask-wearing as a form of “enslavement,” and inaccurately claiming that donning masks limits the wearer's oxygen intake.

Consisting of some 10,000 users, the group was removed after Facebook found that it was spreading false information repeatedly in violation of the tech giant’s policies. Among the postings were ‘mask exemption cards’ from the “Freedom to Breathe Agency.” These cards, sold online, purport to offer the bearer an exemption from donning a mask, but are fraudulent and carry no legal weight. However, they were popular enough that federal officials had to alert the public about them.

“Wearing a face mask posses [sic] a mental and/or physical risk to me. Under the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), I am not required to disclose my condition to you,” read the cards, which misspelled “poses” and cited the incorrect title of the relevant legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Unmasking America is one of a plethora of groups that have emerged since the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended in June that people wear masks.

When a group shares “misinformation” repeatedly, Facebook will effectively shadow ban it by lowering its prominence in user feeds and by halting suggestions that people join the group, strangling its growth. During the coronavirus pandemic, Facebook has been under increased pressure to be even tougher on the spreading of false information. The social media giant confirmed to The Verge that it had removed the Unmasking America group.

The human rights group and online activists Avaaz found that 100 pieces of coronavirus misinformation were shared on Facebook more than 1.7 million times and viewed about 117 million times in April.

That same month, Facebook announced warning labels for whenever a person would like, comment or react to a coronavirus post laden with misinformation. Since March 1, the company has removed more than 2.5 million pieces of content related to mask sales, hand sanitizers and Covid-19 test kits from the platform, according to its own report.

‘No evidence of successful interference’: UK govt rejects new 'Russia & Brexit' probe after Parliament report on alleged meddling

The British government sees no need to look again at the Brexit referendum because it has no evidence that Russia affected its outcome in any way. The comments came after the release of a parliamentary report on the issue.

A statement released by the Boris Johnson government said “a retrospective assessment of the EU referendum is not necessary” after a long-awaited Parliament report on Russia and its alleged influence on British politics finally became public.

We have seen no evidence of successful interference in the EU referendum.

Johnson was among the most vocal advocates of Britain leaving the European Union. Last year he won a general election on a promise to “get Brexit done” after embarrassingly protracted negotiations on its terms under his predecessor, Prime Minister Theresa May.

The Russia report prepared by the Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee (ICS) was published on Tuesday after months of delays. It noted that, when MPs asked spy agency MI5 if they had evidence of Russian interference in the Brexit vote, the agency “initially provided just six lines of text” before referring to public data. This indicated “extreme caution” among the intelligence agencies to touch the contentious vote, the report said.

Labour ISC member Kevan Jones said on Tuesday that no evidence had been found by the government “because no one asked the work to be done,” accusing the Tories of failing to protect the Brexit vote from possible Russian meddling.

African Cardinal: BLM Seeks ‘Destruction of the Nuclear Family’

The formidable archbishop of Durban, South Africa, said that the goals and methods of Black Lives Matter in the United States have little in common with the anti-Apartheid movement he was a part of in the late 80s and early 90s.

“Fighting apartheid racism meant fighting a political system that could be identified, of which it was easy to show the circumstances in which it hurt people,” declared Cardinal Wilfrid Napier in an interview last week with La Bussola Quotidiana. “The claims of Black Lives Matter, however, are so general that I’m not sure I understand how it intends to fight racism.”

“They should start directing the protest to specific thematic areas where they can make a difference and change things,” the cardinal continued. “In my opinion, for example, if you want to eradicate racism, you should start from the behaviors learned and experienced in the family and from there extend the change to the rest of society.”

The deeper problem with the Black Lives Matter movement, however, is its hostility toward the family, the cardinal said.

“When I went to read the BLM manifesto, I realized that their mission is not only the eradication of racism,” he said. “I found, in fact, objectives such as the destruction of the nuclear family as a Western imposition” along with “the promotion of gender ideology and an anti-family agenda.”

The root of the problem, Napier continued, is the racial antagonism at the heart of the Black Live Matter movement.

“It almost seems that BLM’s ideology wants to present all whites as enemies of blacks and all blacks as enemies of whites, waiting for a great confrontation between the two sides from which the winner will have defeated racism,” the cardinal stated.

“The only way to seriously face the racism problem is to go back to the Word of God that defines what we are,” he said. “For example, in Genesis it is clearly said that all lives have equal value and each person is created in the image and likeness of God.”

“So I have to see God in others and act in such a way that they see God in me,” he said.

Even if Black Lives Matter began with good intentions, Napier noted, it was hijacked along the way by other ideologies and other interests, such as the abortion lobby, which aggressively seeks to impose radical population control in Africa.

“The culture of abortion is definitely one of them,” he said. “Wanting to reduce the number of Africans is certainly a manifestation of racism. So is allocating economic aid to African countries conditioned on the introduction of legislation favorable to same-sex unions, abortion, and similar matters.”

“In this modus operandi of international powers there is true racism: establishing conditions for aid to a certain group of people because you believe that they are too many,” he added.

Missouri AG Wants To Dismiss Charges Against St. Louis Couple Who Brandished Guns On Property During Protests

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt pledged Monday to seek a dismissal of charges against St. Louis couple Mark and Patricia McCloskey.

The couple faced down a group of demonstrators in late June with an AR-15 and a handgun. St. Louis circuit attorney Kim Gardner charged the pair with felony weapons charges Monday.

“Citizens shouldn’t be targeted for exercising their #2A right to self-defense,” Schmitt tweeted Monday. “STL prosecutor Kim Gardner is engaged in political prosecution … As AG I’m entering the case seeking dismissal & [to] defend all Missourians’ right to protect their lives/property.”

Gardner was quick to indicate her disapproval of the McCloskeys’ actions.

“I am alarmed at the events that occurred over the weekend, where peaceful protestors were met by guns and a violent assault,” she tweeted June 29. “We must protect the right to peacefully protest, and any attempt to chill it with intimidation or threat of deadly force will not be tolerated.”

Jihadi no more? UK police mull ditching ‘Islamist terror’ & similar phrases after complaints from Muslim cops

Police in the UK may drop terms like 'Islamist terror' and 'jihadi' after a Muslim policing group complained they fuel negative stereotypes and suggested substituting less “offensive” terms like 'faith-claimed terrorism.’

The National Association of Muslim Police has complained the use of terms like “Islamist terror” that “have a direct link to Islam and Jihad…do not help community relations and public confidence,” arguing they instead contribute to discrimination, Islamophobia, and negative perceptions of Muslims.

Instead, they want attackers motivated by religious ideology to be described with the Arabic word ‘irhabi,’ used in the Middle East to describe extremist views – or, if using an Arabic word is a bridge too far for the British police, as ‘faith-claimed terrorism,’ ‘terrorists abusing religious motivations,’ or ‘adherents of Osama bin Laden’s ideology.’

The subject was discussed at an online conference last month addressed by Met Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, head of counterterrorism policing, though the matter did not become public until it was reported by the Times on Monday – meeting with more than a little mockery (and some serious concern) on social media.

Police are considering dropping the terms 'Islamist terror' and 'jihadi' because they 'don't help community relations.' I wonder what cuddly terms will be deemed acceptable replacements in these woke times?

— Gordon Blackburn (@gordonblackburn) July 20, 2020

If this goes ahead, after the next attack (and there will be one) the police will have to look the public in the eye and use a euphemism to explain why innocent people have been murdered. People aren't stupid, and they will not respond well. https://t.co/AXSIvP1jtT

— Liam Duffy (@LiamSD12) July 20, 2020

Counter-extremist think tank Quilliam’s David Toube panned the idea, warning the Times, “People do not like to feel that they are being told only the partial truth…[that] there is a serious problem with Islamist terrorism.”

The use of any term that obscures that fact risks damaging public trust in the police.

Met Chief Superintendent Nik Adams said the meeting had been convened to look at opinions from all sides, explaining that, while the police force had no immediate plans to adopt the NAMP’s recommendations for relabeling these offenders, it was “vital” they settle upon the best terminology to “define the threat accurately and succinctly but also to avoid alienating communities crucial to our efforts.”

The NAMP, which boasts upwards of 3,000 members, was established in 2007 to address “inequality and unfairness” in the police service, according to its website. However, many responding to the news seemed not to have heard of it, and some questioned the need for a religious-specific police organization.

Heilemann: Trump’s Unmarked Paramilitary Units are Trial Run for ‘Trying to Steal This Election’

Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” network national affairs analyst John Heilemann said President Donald Trump would use unidentified federal agents like the ones he sent to Portland to use force “to try to steal this election.”

Heilemann said, “This is not just performative authoritarianism. This is authoritarianism. These are paramilitary units. These are the things we have seen in authoritarian regimes in third world countries throughout the second half of the 20th century. This is not a mystery what’s going on here. I think to look at this through the prism of symbolic politics, the law and order campaign, Trump trying to rerun the Nixon playbook is true but doesn’t go far enough we’re looking here—this is a dark —I don’t want to be overly alarmist about this, but this is the time to be alarmist knowing where Donald Trump stands politically, understanding where we are headed in this election.”

He continued, “I think we are looking at potentially a trial run for a kind of — a genuine attempt to, through intimidation, and potentially through force, to try to — to try to steal this election.”

He added, “I think we are now at the point where we see the things that the president is doing, we see his intention to not accept an outcome of the election where he loses to Joe Biden. He’s making it very clear and some of it is rhetoric about mail-in voting, but when the next thing, the next breath is he’s talking about sending unmarked paramilitary guards to blue states with very blue cities run by Democratic mayors, I think we should all take seriously the prospect that this is a dress rehearsal, a trial run for first an attempt at voter intimidation on election day. Are these unmarked paramilitary units going to be doing security at the polls in battleground states? I think that’s a question we’d like to have answered. That is potentially an effort at voter intimidation, and what happens in the overtime period? Anyone serious about the election recognizes, listening to the president that there’s a high likelihood he’s not going to concede if he loses on election night.”

Farage: ‘The Chinese State Has Conducted Murder on a Vast Scale’

Nigel Farage said that it is time for Western nations to stand up to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for the horrors the regime is committing against the Uyghur people in Xinjiang, which he described as a “stain on the world”.

The Brexit Party leader said that he, alongside other Sino-skeptics, may have focussed too much on the economic and security risks posed by the Chinese state, rather than the humanitarian atrocities committed against the Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang and the Falun Gong spiritual movement at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.

“I am the first to say that we all now need to spend more time on the moral outrages that are being perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party. It a truly wicked regime which none of us—left or right—should ever trust,” Farage wrote in Newsweek.

“It is no exaggeration to say that the Chinese state has conducted murder on a vast scale,” he lamented.

The former MEP admitted that during his tenure in the European Parliament, he overlooked the plight of Falun Gong spiritual movement as they protested outside his office in Brussels, attempting to alert leaders of the European Union about the mass imprisonment and organ harvesting that practitioners have faced in China for decades.

Mr Farage confessed that he “did not really take them seriously, and viewed their lobbying as an irritation.”

“I am not alone. Over the last couple of decades, the Western world and its media have given very little attention to human rights abuses in China. As a result of this, most people who are quite happy to buy competitively priced goods from that country simply don’t realize the breadth of the crimes against humanity for which the Chinese regime is responsible,” Mr Farage wrote.

Addressing the mass internment of Uyghurs Muslims in concentration camps, the forced sterilisation, and mass brainwashing to “join the cult of hero-worshiping President Xi Jinping”, Mr Farage said: “While it is true that some Uighurs are responsible for terrorist reprisals in response to the crackdown by the Chinese authorities, nothing can excuse what the Chinese state has done to these people.”

“The time has come for the West to address this stain on the world,” he proclaimed.

I will NEVER understand why @Nigel_Farage could ask people to sign this petition to legally recognise the Uighur Muslim genocide, while Lib Dem leadership candidates @EdwardJDavey & @LaylaMoran ignored my repeated public pleas to do so on here while I was on silent hunger strike https://t.co/Qas9eOPvZh

— (@MaajidNawaz) July 20, 2020

Mr Farage’s pronouncement comes as United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo flew to London to meet with Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer, as well as a bipartisan group of Members of Parliament as a part of the Interparliamentary Alliance on China.

One of the leaders of the coalition, former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith told Sky News that he hopes the subject of the meeting today will be that: “America and the UK should lead the free world to come together, to work out together, how they respond to what is a growingly arrogant and aggressive government in China.”
