When you read this article it will become apparent that the US gov't/defense dept in conjunction with the top tech companies, are using China as a boogeyman to get what they want. Just as was done with the USSR previously.
Their argument is something akin to: we've transformed China into a technocratic dystopian state with no rights or freedom, but… the US is falling behind! We must bridge the gap! So that… we become exactly like China.
