Trump to send federal agents to Chicago as part of ‘Operation Legend’ to help local cops, not patrol Portland-style

President Donald Trump is announcing Wednesday he is sending federal agents to Chicago as part of an expanded “Operation Legend” operation, designed to bolster existing law enforcement efforts — not a Portland-style paramilitary strike force that attracted widespread criticism.

The Chicago Sun-Times has learned that agents from Operation Legend, a violent-crime initiative, are being sent to Chicago and will act cooperatively with Chicago Police and the Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s office. Albuquerque is also getting extra agents.

Trump is to make the announcement at 2:15 p.m. Chicago time from the East Room of the White House. He is expected to deliver remarks on Operation Legend and its role in combating “violent crime in American cities.”

The Justice Department is expanding Operation Legend. Through the program, Attorney General William Barr earlier sent more than 100 agents from the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, DEA and ATF to help state and local law enforcement, beginning in Kansas City, Missouri.

Trump’s decision to send in extra agents — if they are used as reinforcements and work with local officials, including the Chicago-based U.S. Attorney – is not expected to be opposed by Lightfoot.

Lightfoot said Tuesday she was told by John Lausch, the U.S. attorney in Chicago that there is no “Portland-style deployment” of federal agents headed to the city.

Based on that conversation, Lightfoot said: “What I understand at this point — and I caveat that — is that the Trump administration is not going to foolishly deploy unnamed agents to the streets of Chicago,” the mayor said. “As I understand it, what we will be getting are some additional resources in the FBI, the DEA and the ATF.”

The Wednesday announcement comes as Trump has increasingly attacked big city Democratic mayors, taking particular aim at Lightfoot, who has returned verbal fire in kind.

The federal help arrives as the city continues to struggle to contain gun violence, with the latest tragedy on Tuesday night, with a shooting outside a gang funeral that left 15 people shot.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany hinted at the Tuesday briefing that federal agents working with Operation Legend may be sent to Chicago.

At the briefing, McEnany said Trump has “offered his help, and we encourage the mayor to take it and to be forthright about the situation in her [city], much like the governor of Missouri was in working with us on Operation Legend to protect the people of Missouri,” McEnany said.

Chicago will remains on guard as federal agents stay in Portland over the protests of that city’s mayor and the Oregon governor. Federal officers in Portland — not wearing uniforms — patrolled city streets, clashing with demonstrators and making arrests.

Ousted Cardinal McCarrick ran sex ring at N.J. beach house

Former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick ran a depraved sex ring of underage boys at a beach house on the Jersey Shore, a disturbing new lawsuit claims.

The suit, filed by a man using the pseudonym Doe 14, claims that in 1982 and 1983, when he was as young as 14 years old, he and other victims were taken on weekend overnight trips to a Sea Girt beach house.

“McCarrick assigned sleeping arrangements, choosing his victims from the boys, seminarians and clerics present at the beach house,” according to the suit filed in state court under New Jersey’s Child Victims Act.

“On these occasions, minor boys were assigned to different rooms and paired with adult clerics.”

The victim claims that he fell into McCarrick’s clutches in 1982 through Brother Andrew Hewitt, who was then principal at Essex Catholic Boy’s High School. Hewitt allegedly abused Doe. He also introduced McCarrick to Doe as someone who could help pay the boy’s school tuition, the suit claims.

At the time, McCarrick was Bishop of the Archdiocese of Metuchen. He became a cardinal in Feb. 2001. Hewitt died in 2002.

The suit names other members of the Catholic Church who also allegedly abused Doe. It alleges that McCarrick steadily climbed the hierarchy of the church despite being dogged by accusations of abuse for decades. The Archdiocese of Newark, which is named in the suit, did not respond to an inquiry.

McCarrick, 90, in 2018 became the first cardinal in nearly a century to resign from his position following his suspension for a credible sexual abuse allegation involving an altar boy in New York. He’s denied wrongdoing.

The Daily News has previously reported on creepy postcards McCarrick sent to boys that experts say had the hallmarks of grooming.

The new suit is not the first to reference the beach house.

In an interview with Slate last year. McCarrick said he believed his accusers had been manipulated by his “enemies” to come up with similar stories involving abuse on the Shore.

“I’m not as bad as they paint me. I do not believe that I did the things that they accused me of," he said.

“There were many who were in that situation (at the beach house) who never had any problems like that.”
