It's pretty clear that at least some of his people had never actually fired a weapon before. You certainly would not choose .22 LR as the caliber of choice for a firefight.

If you are going to take advice on "how long" from an outside source, use the Mormon standard of 1 year. The FEMA strategy is for only 10 days. That's okay if help is on the way, but help is NOT on the way for just an ordinary economic downturn.
