Officer fires at suspect accused of threatening suicide at Safeway in Tumwater

TUMWATER, Wash. — A suspect accused of threatening suicide was injured in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday evening outside a Safeway in Tumwater.

A spokesperson for the Tumwater Police Department said a man called the FBI at about 6 p.m. and threatened suicide.

The FBI alerted police and officers, who were called to the Safeway at 520 Cleveland Ave SE.

Police said the man was in his pickup truck, claiming to have a gun and a knife. The man drove around the Safeway parking lot and refused to stop, police said.

Officers used a spike strip to stop the man but he floored his truck toward police as they tried to approach. In response police said an officer fired his weapon at the suspect and injured him.

Authorities are negotiationg with the suspect, who remains in his pickup truck. The vehicle is surrounded by police patrol units and the Thurston County SWAT team.

Police said no one else has been injured and the store has been evacuated.
