Poynter is a Thought Leader
Poynter taps into the expertise and experience of media executives, journalists, technologists and academics to answer the biggest questions around the future of journalism and democracy.
Fact-Checking
Poynter founded the International Fact-Checking Network in 2015 and is the leading convener, teacher and community-builder for fact-checkers around the world. Poynter hosts a Global Fact-Checking Summit each summer and International Fact-Checking Day each April 2, sharing best practices and fostering collaboration in this fast-growing field of accountability journalism. Poynter worked with fact-checkers to write a Code of Principles, whose adherents must demonstrate that they use sourcing and verification techniques and meet other standards to ensure their independence and journalistic integrity. With support from Omidyar Network, Open Society Foundations and other funders, Poynter provides e-learning, in-person training, news coverage, a newsletter and analysis of the impact of fact-checking around the world.
Ethics
Many news organizations and even the Society of Professional Journalists based their codes of ethics of Poynter's pioneering work in this field. Poynter faculty developed Guidelines for Ethical Decision-Making to help newsrooms ask and answer the questions they needed to consider when they faced an ethical decision. Reporters and editors call Poynter's Ethics Hotline, often on deadline, for help fast. Major news organizations frequently interview Poynter for comment and insight on media issues. Poynter offers e-learning and news coverage on ethics, and the Craig Newmark Chair in Journalism Ethics writes about ethics issues for Poynter.org and conducts a major journalism ethics convening each year.
Leadership
As news organizations transform to meet audience demands, their leaders face new challenges amid diminishing resources. Poynter offers workshops throughout the year to coach newsroom leaders on setting priorities, handling difficult conversations and bringing out the best in their teams. We rely on 360-degree feedback to help leaders find ways to improve. And we coach participants on their Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (R), fostering insight into how they interact with people and information and how to appreciate the approaches of others with different styles. Our leadership faculty write about the topic, do custom teaching for newsrooms and other organizations, and offer workshops on leadership, including popular seminars for new managers, women in digital leadership roles and a workshop to promote diversity in digital journalism.
