"Sons of American fathers and British mothers (their fathers being military personnel stationed at the United States Air Force base at RAF South Ruislip, London),

.

they were legend among US Air Force SP Squadrons because of this song.. "all the planes have been grounded".. Sandman was a slang term we used to talk about fighting falling asleep on a long winter one man post,.. snow, cold, and dead silence.. it was extremely hard to stay awake.. and a court martial if you didn't.. The line "did you hear of my enlistment"… "ain't the fire inside".. stove in the guard shack.. The years gone by fast.. "did you hear of my enlistment".. almost every line rings true of a flightline SP pulling a severe weather post….. and we were prone to really colorful slang.. Sandman,.. "Hawk" was the strong bitter cold wind.. "Z Monster" was the Sandman's companion.. cold weather, northern tier posts were the worst..

.

I don't know if it's common knowledge the strong USAF roots of this song.. but we knew.. and remembered them for it."
