Schild, in German, is also used for a sign, a nameplate, or license plate, etc.
Story is the Bauer business had a red sign, thus they business with the red sign, or Rothschild.
Roth is the old German form of Rot, which is the color red. It's pronounced like Rowt, using the row from rowboat. Schild is pronounced like our lovable schill, with a d on the end. The i in German is prounounced like we pronounce e, so Schild would almost sound like the English word shield to a non-German speaker.
