Several weeks ago a person from an extreme liberal family emailed newbaby pictures. The person added a caution "not to put it on Facebook because they spy on people". This, from a longtime Facebook user family, indicates a sea change was in the works even before Zuck's testimony.

Awareness of the surveillance and privacy issues is growing even among the deepblue libs.

Read up on web beacons.

Learn about the referrer field in the HTTP header.

Basically if you visit a page that has a Facebook logo on it, whether you click that logo or not, your browser goes to a Facebook server to fetch the image data, and also tells that Facebook server what webpage you were on when the request was made. This is standard HTTP protocol and is not limited to Facebook by any means.

There also also invisible images called web beacons or single-pixel or transparent images, that do the same thing, that are invisible.

Then there is browser fingerprinting. This technique allows a website to develop a unique profile of a user, based on a fingerprint of things installed on your computer, that works similar to cookies for identifying an individual user.

I posted links to read on these topics a few days ago and don't have the links anymore. Just do a web search and you will learn more than you ever cared to know.

Thank you anon.

Also thanks for the reminder to newfags, which I'll reinforce:

It is helpful if memeanons deposit a copy of their work in the memebank for twatters to find easily. You can always find the current memebank by looking in the catalog.
