Colorado School Gunman Gets Life With Possibility of Parole. I’m sure this is just a friendly reminder as school is getting close to going back into session right?

A teen who told authorities that he launched a fatal shooting attack on his suburban Denver school last yearbecause he wanted them to experience trauma like that he had experiencedwas sentenced on Friday to life in prison with the possibility of parole after about two decades behind bars.

Alec McKinney apologized to the parents of Kendrick Castillo, who was killed as he tried to stop the attack at STEM School Highlands Ranch, and to the other students wounded as well as traumatized by the attack.

“I will never repeat these actions ever again because the harm I caused is truly too much for anyone to bear,” he said as he seemed to choke back tears and his voice cracked.

McKinney, 17, is the younger of the two students charged in the May 7, 2019, shooting. He was 16 at the time of the shooting so, even though he was prosecuted as an adult, he could be paroled after about 25 years in prison no matter what sentence he received unlike his alleged conspirator, Devon Erickson, who was 18 at the time.

The minimum sentence for first-degree murder for a juvenile is life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years while the minimum sentence for an adult is life without the possibility of parole.

McKinney pleaded guilty to charges for the wounding of six other people who were allegedly shot by either McKinney or Erickson and two other people who were mistakenly shot by a security guard responding to the shooting.

Erickson, 19, has pleaded not guilty to all the same charges McKinney originally faced in the shooting. His lawyers have portrayed McKinney as the ringleader who pressured Erickson to participate. He is scheduled to go on trial in late September.

He will not face the death penalty if he is convicted. Colorado became the 22nd state to abolish the death penalty this year but Erickson could have still been eligible for it because the shooting happened before that law was passed. While Castillos' parents supported pursing capital punishment, District Attorney George Brauchler decided not to, noting that Erickson's lawyers could have argued against it because of his age, lack of a criminal history and other mitigating factors.

Colorado activists urge Medicaid hike in virus relief bill

DENVER — Colorado activists want the federal government to fund more of the state’s Medicaid program ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Several health care groups Thursday called on U.S. senators Cory Gardner and Michael Bennet to seek additional federal funding for Medicaid, a federal-state program for low-income and disabled Americans.

Congress increased the federal share of Medicaid spending by 6.2% to roughly 56% in Colorado in March under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.

The groups say more is needed. By December 2020, state Medicaid enrollment is expected to grow 42% due to the virus-induced economic downturn, according to the nonprofit Colorado Consumer Health Initiative.

Currently, more than 1.2 million Coloradans or about one in five residents depend on Medicaid, a roughly $9 billion program known in the state as Health First Colorado. One in three individuals with disabilities are covered by Medicaid in the state, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Colorado Consumer Health Initiative spokesman Adam Fox said Thursday the groupswant the federal government to fund 64% of the state’s Medicaid program.

Hollowed out public health system faces more cuts amid coronavirus

“He wants to live like any other person”: The human cost of Colorado’s budget crisis

Robin Bolduc, 62 from Boulder, is the main caregiver for her husband, Bruce Goguen, 67, a quadriplegic who uses a ventilator to breathe. Medicaid pays for her husband’s long-term services including caregivers who help feed and bathe him.

In our case it’s the difference between life and death. The difference between my husband being able to live in his community, to be a part of our family, to be my husband,” Bolduc said Thursday at the press conference.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is set to unveil the GOP’s new aid package next week, which will include federal dollars to supplement state Medicaid funding. That plan is a counteroffer to a sweeping $3 trillion proposal that House Democrats approved in May.

In July 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act. It was designed to protect those with disabilities against discrimination and to ensure employment opportunities, state and local government services and public accommodations like transportation.

Car drives through crowd, protester shot in Colorado

AURORA, Colo. (AP) — A car drove through a crowd and a protester was shot in the suburban Denver suburb of Aurora during demonstrations against racial injustice.

The Aurora Police Department said on Twitter that protesters were walking on Interstate 225 Saturday when a vehicle drove through.

Police said a protester fired a weapon, striking at least one person who was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Authorities said the vehicle was towed and they are investigating. Protesters also broke windows to the courthouse and a fire was started in an office, police said. An unlawful assembly was declared and police ordered protesters to leave the area, authorities said.

Tensions have been heightened at recent protests against racial injustice since federal officials were sent to quell demonstrations in Portland, Oregon. Police declared a riot in Seattle on Saturday.

ARepublican lawmakerin Colorado accused the state's governor and his fellow Democrats of ignoring the unrest in Denver caused by protesters and hasappealed to President Donald Trump to send in federal agents.

Trump has already sent in the Feds to quell unrest in Portland, Oregon, against the wishes of local leaders. The president is threatening to do the same in other cities, including Chicago and Seattle, despite mayors and governors telling him not to.

In a letter that he shared on social media, Colorado State Rep. Dave Williams referred to "violent altercations" which in his view were incited by "Antifa thugs" during demonstrations in Denver in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd.

The incident in question was a pro-law enforcement rally on Sunday when there was a clash between those attending a pro-law enforcement rally and counter-protesters in Civic Center Park, 9 News reported.

Williams wrote that Gov. Jared Polis, a Democrat, had "allowed criminals to vandalize, deface and destroythe Capitol grounds as well as the surrounding public and private property near it."

Tweeting the letter, the lawmaker representing Colorado House District 15 wrote: "Colorado has beenabandoned by radical Democrats in power.Violence is at an all time high & decent hard-working citizens need relief now.

"I've asked #Trump for help to stop criminals here because 'selfish bastards' like Gov. Polis refuse to do so."

"Selfish bastards" is a reference to the term Polis had used to describe those who did not wear face coverings in public to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. Newsweek has contacted Polis's office for comment.

The Colorado GOP caucus has appealed to Polis to deploy the National Guard to protect the Colorado State Capitol and other state property from vandalism.

Meanwhile, the presence of federal agents sent to cities such as Portland and Kansas City, who were deployed in response to protests, has raised accusations that such measures escalate violence.

A letter from Colorado Democrats urged U.S. Attorney Jason Dunn to stop the deploymentof federal law enforcement and said that it "has not been requested nor is it acceptable."
