Refugee who volunteered at French cathedral confesses to setting blaze, lawyer says

A Rwandan refugee who volunteered as a warden at France's 15th-century Nantes cathedral has confessed to setting the blaze that gutted its interior a week ago, his lawyer said on Sunday.

The suspect, whose name has not been made public, was taken into custody on Saturday following his confession. He had been arrested and released earlier in the investigation.

"With these confessions, there's a kind of relief: it's someone who is scared, who is somehow overwhelmed," his lawyer, Quentin Chabert, told a news conference on Sunday. "It was important for him, with this cooperation, to show his sincerity."

Asked why his client had set the fires, Chabert declined to elaborate.

The July 18 blaze engulfed the inside of the Gothic structure of the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, destroying its grand organ, stained-glass windows and a painting.

Fires started in three different places within the building, with no sign of a break-in, authorities said. The restoration of the building will take at least three years, the chief architect for France's historical monuments, Pascal Prunet, has said.

Her latest comments, posted to her Twitter account Saturday (25 July), see her predicting a scandal will “erupt”, as she referenced a letter written by “whistleblowers”.

“The bleak truth is that if and when the scandal does erupt, nobody currently cheering this movement on will be able to credibly claim ‘we couldn’t have known’.”

The writer’s tweets received a host of comments, including from the charity Mermaids, whose aim is to support transgender children.

The charity responded: “We support young people no matter their journey. They can identify as themselves and feel safe, no matter the outcome, free from others telling them who they should be. Trans, nonbinary, cisgender or any gender identity. The important thing is to be listened to without prejudice.

Doctor and social media personality Eugene Gu said: “Treating transgender kids as if their gender identity is a mental illness causes them unimaginable psychological harm. Let people choose their own identities.”

Many stars of the Harry Potter movie franchise, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, have condemned Rowling’s views.

A lawyer who helps ultra-wealthy families get secondary citizenships says business is booming in 2020 — and not just because of the coronavirus

A lawyer who helps ultra-wealthy families get secondary citizenships says business is booming in 2020 — and not just because of the coronavirus

Things only escalated in-step with Hong Kong's extradition bill and eventual security law as part of China's crackdown on the semi-autonomous province. Then the global pandemic hit, only exacerbating fears about what may happen should a so-called blue wave hit in November.

Wealthy people sitting in developed countries where anti-billionaire rhetoric is ratcheting up are in "wildfire zones," according to Lesperance.

"What do you do when you're in a wildfire zone?," he said. "Well you engage in fire-prevention techniques. For an American, you may do things like harvest capital gains so I'm paying 23.5% as opposed to 48% or higher in the future. 'I'm going to get fire insurance; I'm going to get alternate residences and citizenships; and I'm going to have a fire escape plan in case of whatever it is.'"

That's where careful planning comes in, because not all markets are created equal. While countries like Saint Kitts and Nevis will sell a family of four passports for as low as $100,000 in a bid to raise revenue in the tourism-dependent nation, it might not get you far.

Americans, long holders of the world's most powerful passport, are now barred from Europe, Japan, and many other countries.

"Visa-free travel, we have discovered, now that the tide has gone out during the pandemic, is useless," he said.

That's why it's important for many people to have a backup plan in place well before things go south. Take, for an example, one of Lesperance's clients in Florida.

"Luckily we had got him one of the EU citizenship by investments," he said, "so he's sitting in a resort doing his 14-day lockdown in Malta."

A California grocery store worker was suspended after pepper-spraying a customer who refused to wear a mask and rammed her with a shopping cart

A Ralphs supermarket employee in Central Los Angeles was suspended for five days after an altercation that occurred on July 15.

The employee confronted a man about wearing a face-covering in the store. The man refused and rammed her with a shopping cart. The employee pepper-sprayed the man and called the police, according to CBS Los Angeles.

"I looked down there and there was this guy just yelling at someone, and then all of a sudden you see him, you know, take the handles of his cart and just try to ram this woman," the witness told CBSLA.

A California supermarket worker was suspended after she pepper-sprayed a man who refused to wear a face mask and allegedly rammed her with a shopping cart.

CBS Los Angeles reported that the employee confronted the man on July 15 at Ralphs grocery store in Central Los Angeles and told the man he had to wear a face-covering or leave the establishment, a guideline required by Los Angeles County.

The man rammed the employee with a shopping cart, and in response "she pepper-sprayed him and called the police," according to the report. The incident was recorded on a cellphone video.

A witness told the outlet that they saw the man causing a commotion in the store.

"There was this guy just yelling at someone, and then all of a sudden you see him, you know, take the handles of his cart and just try to ram this woman," the witness told CBSLA.

The man was taken to the local hospital and it is unclear if he will face any charges, according to the report.

"The associate was suspended for five days for not following company guidelines on responding to customers not wearing a face covering and not following de-escalation procedures, which could have prevented the incident," a company spokesman said, according to the CBSLA report.

Ralphs announced on July 22 that all store locations would require customers to wear face coverings alone with "associates who continue to wear masks."

"We are taking this extra step now because we recognize additional precautions are needed to protect our country," the company said in a statement on their site.
