Chicago mayor says she won't allow federal agents to come 'play police' in her city amid violence

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot remains adamant that she will not allow federal troops to quell her city despite President Trump's push to send them. Trump's move to send 200 federal officers into Chicago comes as the city follows an 80% surge of murders and shootings. The president has sent agents into other cities to help control the growing unrest and violence seen across the country, but Lightfoot said it's improbable to solve local issues by sending in people who aren't familiar with her city. "We can’t just allow anyone to come into Chicago, play police in our streets and our neighborhoods when they don’t know the first thing about our city," Lightfoot said on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday. "That’s a recipe for disaster, and that’s what you're seeing playing out in Portland on a nightly basis. We don’t need that here. That is not a value add, and it doesn’t help enhance our public safety." Her comments come shortly after a top Department of Homeland Security official said Lightfoot had "turned 180 degrees" on working with Trump regarding federal agents.

Lightfoot's house was surrounded by protesters after it was revealed that she had a phone call with Trump regarding his decision, a conversation that the mayor's office referred to as "brief and straightforward." The mayor said she wrote a letter to Trump last week about other ways the federal government can help besides sending in federal agents. One area that can be beneficial is gun control, she said. "The fact of the matter is our gun problem is related to the fact that we have too many illegal guns on our street," Lightfoot said, adding, "We are being inundated with guns from states that have virtually no gun control, no background checks, no ban on assault weapons. That is hurting cities like Chicago. That is the thing that if the president wanted to help, that and the other things I identified in my letter, he could do today, tomorrow, but he is not really interested in helping in that way."
