The key is to provoke them to take the first step. It can't be obvious … but something like grinning at them is hard for the prosecution to argue in court. Once the other person is in motion, though, there's no need to let them actually hit you – especially if there is some concrete or steel nearby that they can hit instead.

Justice is an outcome, not a process. That bail was wrong and probably not the first time the judge has done that. The citizens brought his error to his (literal) doorstep.
