Revolt is Brewing as Bernie Sanders Delegates Prepare to Rebel if Biden Doesn’t Cave to ‘Medicare For All’ Demands

At least 360 Democrat delegates, mostly Bernie Sanders supporters, have signed a pledge to vote against a Democrat national platform that does not include medicare for all.

According to Politico’s delegate tracker, Biden has 2,632 delegates and Sanders currently has 1,076

The Dems are holding a ‘virtual’ DNC in Milwaukee in just three weeks and it looks there may be a repeat of the 2016 convention.

In 2016, Bernie supporters booed Hillary Clinton at the convention after WikiLeaks released DNC emails proving the primary was rigged in Hillary’s favor.

Bernie was burned again this time around and his supporters and delegates have not forgotten.

A revolt is brewing among Bernie Sanders delegates three weeks from the Democratic National Convention.

More than 360 delegates, most of whom back Sanders, have signed on to a pledge to vote against the Democratic Party’s platform if it does not include support for “Medicare for All,” the petition’s organizers told POLITICO. They argue that single-payer health care is an urgent priority amid a worldwide pandemic and the biggest unemployment crisis since the Great Depression.

“This pandemic has shown us that our private health insurance system does not work for the American people. Millions of people have lost their jobs and their health care at the same time,” said Judith Whitmer, a Sanders delegate and chair of the convention’s Nevada delegation who helped spearhead the pledge. “There’s people leaving the hospital now with millions of dollars in medical bills. What are we going to do about that?”

The warning is all but certain to set up a clash between Sanders’ most dedicated supporters and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who opposes Medicare for All, at a time when the party is seeking to demonstrate unity ahead of its August convention. Though the petition signers have little chance of revising the platform to include Medicare for All support, they do have the numbers to draw attention to their protest and cause.

1619 Project Editor Leading New York Times Effort to Expand into Hollywood

The New York Times is looking to expand aggressively into Hollywood in the hopes of spinning its brand of journalism into lucrative TV shows and movies. Leading the charge will be the editor behind the newspaper’s controversial 1619 Project, which sought to reframe U.S. history around slavery.

Since 2016, Caitlin Roper has served as a senior editor at The New York Times Magazine, where she spearheaded the 1619 Project with reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones. Roper is now taking on the new role of executive producer of scripted projects for the newspaper. Her job will consist of adapting Times reporting into “fictional projects” for the big and small screens, according to an announcement on Monday.

Roper has already been performing her new job on an informal basis, including securing a recent Hollywood deal for the 1619 Project that will turn the magazine series into feature films, television series, documentaries, and various forms of unscripted content. Lionsgate will serve as the studio while Oprah Winfrey has come aboard as a producer.

The 1619 Project has generated controversy since it was published last year. The series of articles sought to erase 1776 as the founding of the United States and to replace it with 1619, the year the first slaves arrived to the British colonies. But a number of prominent academics took issue with the project by disputing its argument that the Revolutionary War was fought to preserve slavery.

The Times has promoted the 1619 Project in schools by developing a classroom version of the project to be taught to elementary school children. The push has drawn ire from many who dispute the newspaper’s reframing of U.S. history, including Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AK), who is proposing a bill that would prevent schools from using the material in classrooms.

India Issues Ban on 47 More Chinese Apps Amid Heightened Border Tensions

India has banned 47 more Chinese apps just weeks after banning 59 of them, including TikTok, a video-sharing social networking app owned by ByteDance, a Beijing-based internet company.

"We have banned 47 mobile apps from China in this ongoing exercise which highlights the government's seriousness about data privacy and security," an Indian information ministry official, who asked to remain anonymous, told AFP Monday.

"The order was issued on Friday. Most of these 47 apps are banned for the same reasons as the earlier 59,” the official added.

Some of the banned apps include sharing apps SHAREit Lite and Helo Lite, the Times of India reported.

Tensions between India and China have increased in recent weeks, with troops from each country engaging in a deadly confrontation in mid-June in eastern Ladakh, an Indian union territory. The border clash left 20 Indian soldiers dead.

The two countries have accused each other of transgressing the de facto border known as the Line of Actual Control that separates Ladakh from the Chinese Tibet Autonomous Region.

TikTok and other apps created by China-based developers have also been under scrutiny by the US government in recent weeks.

Last week, the US House of Representatives voted to block federal employees from downloading TikTok on government-issued devices as part of a $741 billion defense policy bill. The amendment targeting the app was approved by a 336-71 vote.

US President Donald Trump also revealed earlier this month that a ban on TikTok is something his administration is weighing.

“It’s something we’re looking at, yes,” Trump said in an interview with Gray Television’s Greta Van Susteren. “It’s a big business. Look, what happened with China with this virus, what they’ve done to this country and to the entire world is disgraceful.”

MI6 Apologises After Being Accused of Tribunal Hearing Interference, Report Says

A report of MI6 officers "meddling" was purportedly connected with a hearing on a case about whether the British MI5 domestic intelligence agency could justify allowing its agents and informants to participate in serious crimes, including murder and torture, as a means of getting information.

Tribunal secretary Susan Cobb accused two MI6 officers of trying to intervene in an investigatory powers tribunal (IPT) hearing in March 2019, after they allegedly tried to ask her to conceal several documents from the tribunal's presiding judges, The Guardian reported.

“It was inappropriate for your staff to seek to intervene in ongoing legal proceedings in the way they sought to do", Cobb wrote to MI6, days after she was allegedly contacted by the two officers, according to the report.

The incident caused MI6 to apologize to Cobb, noting that she had only been contacted in order "to understand better" the circulation of MI6-related information.

"Please accept my apologies for any misunderstanding that has arisen as a result of the approach made to the tribunal on this issue", an unnamed MI6 senior official wrote to Cobb, cited by The Guardian.

According to Cobb, two MI6 officers called her to express concern over “various inspection reports” that they claimed had been filed by mistake, later asking her to conceal the reports from presiding judges.

The Guardian did not elaborate on the contents of the disputed documents, only noting that the incident could be reported now after the special tribunal hearing over the complaints against British intelligence took place on Monday.

The episode allegedly took place in late 2019, related to the case about whether intelligence can authorise its agents or informants to take part in murder or torture as a means of obtaining information. The tribunal reportedly pronounced such practices to be lawful in December 2019, saying it did not breach human rights, but currently the case "is heading for the court of appeal".

The controversial MI5 policy of allowing agents and informants to engage in torture and murder as a means of gaining information was initially reported in 2018.

Paedophile worked on What Now: Nikola Marinovich admits child sex abuse image charges

A former cheerleading coach who sexually abused children can now be revealed as the convicted paedophile who worked on children's TV show What Now.

Auckland man Nikola Michael Marinovich can be identified after he pleaded guilty today in Auckland District Court to charges brought by Customs relating to serious child sexual exploitation material.

Marinovich, 34, admitted seven charges relating to possessing, making and distributing objectionable images. He was remanded in custody for sentencing in September, with the judge warning a sentence of imprisonment was "inevitable".

he Herald can also reveal that, while awaiting trial on the Customs charges, the sexual predator was hired to work at a national cheerleading competition - despite bail conditions prohibiting contact with minors.

Marinovich is the former executive director of the now defunct Total Cheerleading. He was jailed in 2013 for repeatedly abusing several of his students after plying them with spirits and then assaulting them in his car and home.

One of the girls was molested as she lay exhausted on a gym mat after a one-on-one training session. The abuse only ended when the 15-year-old's father arrived to pick her up.

And despite having served prison time for his sexual pursuit of young cheerleaders, Marinovich was later hired as a freelance cameraman to film two national cheerleading competitions after his release from prison - sparking a high-level investigation this month by the New Zealand Cheer Union.

"As an organisation we're looking into how that happened," union chairwoman Selena Duncan told the Herald.

"It's making me feel quite nauseous."

Case reveals gaps in police vetting

The sexual predator was freed from prison several years ago and thanks to lax police vetting was allowed further access to children after landing numerous freelance cameraman jobs through his company SkyVision Ltd.

A Herald investigation revealed he had access to at least 10 schools while working on the What Now TV show. The kids' TV show is made by production company Whitebait Media, which is co-owned by former children's presenter Jason Gunn and his wife Janine Morrell-Gunn.

#DefundThePolice might not poll well with ordinary Americans, but emboldened murderers are taking full advantage of demoralized police, killing in numbers some cities haven’t seen in years.

Denver might be leading the pack, with murders jumping nearly 50% in the first six months of 2020, compared to the same time period the previous year.

Also seeing major increases are offenses we might place under the banner of “riot-related crimes” including aggravated assault and arson.

Denver’s Democratic Mayor Michael Hancock delivered his annual State of the City address on Monday and was candid about the city’s increasing lawlessness, admitting that “crime is a growing risk.” He called the trend “unacceptable” and “troubling,” and said, “not just in Denver, but nationwide.”

Hancock has been opposed to #DefundThePolice, stating in his address that he would not defund “the very programs and initiatives that make Denver an innovator in reform.”

The numbers elsewhere bear out Hancock’s concerns for the nation as a whole.

At the start of July, Chicago officials said that “shootings and murders rose significantly in June compared to the same month last year.” While the overall crime rate is down, 329 people had been killed in Chicago in the first half of the year, “an increase of about 34% from the 246 homicides during the same period last year.” Or as NBC Chicago dryly noted, “The city has already seen more than 300 homicides this year, blowing past the benchmark that Supt. David Brown challenged the police department to stay under in April.”

Far from jumping on the #DefundThePolice bandwagon — at least so far — Chicago police rolled out two new “gun violence” units in June. Even so, the radical increase in murders there has Mayor Lori Lightfoot complained on Sunday that her city is “inundated with guns” from “states that have virtually no gun control.”

Out-of-state guns don’t commit murder, Madam Mayor. In-Chicago killers do.

Murders and shootings in Bill de Blasio’s New York City are pretty much out of control following a quarter-century of declines starting with former Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s administration in 1994.

For the month of June 2020, the number of people victimized by gun violence and murder in New York City spiked significantly, when compared to the same period in 2019. Between June 1 and June 30, there was a 130% increase in the number of shooting incidents across the city (205 v. 89) as the number of shootings rose in every borough of New York. The number of people murdered citywide increased to 39 v. 30, (+ 30%) for the month, while the number of burglaries increased to 1,783 v. 817 (+118%) and the number of auto thefts increased to 696 v. 462 (+51%) citywide.

De Blasio initially resisted the #DefundThePolice movement but caved earlier this month. Calling it “a transformative moment,” de Blasio has committed in principle to slashing a billion of dollars out of the NYPD budget, a 15% cut. The money won’t go to robbed or murdered taxpayers, but to social services and “youth” groups often pushing for even more cuts.

On the other side of the country, Los Angeles reported a “14% increase in homicides compared to last year.”

Minneapolis — where George Floyd was killed by police — is arguably home to the entire #DefundThePolice movement, and the City Council there has already voted (in violation of the city charter) to eliminate the police department entirely.
