A "peace officer" patrols populated areas to ensure there is no violence or other disturbing events occurring. Such an officer helps resolve disputes that people bring to him and informs neighbors how to find resolution to a disagreement.
A "law enforcement officer" carries a big stick and can arrest an offender - who is disturbing the community or not. Such an officer is prepared for violence and is only there to enforce law.
A uniform tends to nullify an officer's humanity
but, the only time we should nullify our humanity
is towards a dangerous enemy.
