The Mayor of Waynesboro was arrested Monday in Statesboro on theft and fraud charges.
According to Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office jail records, Gregory Carswell was arrested and charged with two counts of felony theft by deception, and two felony counts of identity theft fraud when using/possessing identifying information concerning a person.
Carswell was booked Monday and released on a $10,000 bond.
According to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, the Statesboro Police Department contacted them Friday and they notified Carswell that he needed to report to Statesboro to see if they were proceeding with charges or to turn himself in. Carswell went to Statesboro Monday and was arrested.
Burke County Chief Deputy Lewis Blanchard said Carswell told him it was potentially a misunderstanding from when he worked at a Statesboro title pawn business.
