Angela Merkel makes improbable comeback as Germanyā€™s ā€˜crisis leaderā€™

German chancellorā€™s steady leadership in Covid-19 fight has helped boost her party in opinion polls

Merkel has brushed off calls for her to reconsider running in 2021 for a record fifth term

Angela Merkel has been so successful in outfoxing and systematically eliminating any would-be challengers to her rule that there are not any obvious political heavyweights left in her conservative party with the clout or stature to step in to succeed her when she retires next year. No heir apparent. No one in the wings.

Germany has come through the coronavirus crisis in relatively good shape so far and much of the economy has reopened as the numbers of daily new infections and deaths have dwindled to manageable levels. But with Merkel, only the countryā€™s eighth chancellor since 1949, set to become its first post-war leader to leave office under their own volition in 2021, a period of unprecedented lame-duck uncertainty and perhaps even power vacuum turmoil for her party loom.

Huaweiā€™s Meng Wanzhou seeks Canadian spy-service documents, claiming national security ā€˜cover-upā€™ about her arrest

Canadaā€™s intelligence service says the material could identify secret ā€˜human sourcesā€™ involved in the case

Meng wants fuller access to the redacted documents about her arrest, as she seeks to have her extradition case thrown out as an abuse of process

Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou is demanding fuller access to redacted spy-service documents about her arrest that her lawyers say Canadian authorities are trying to ā€œcover upā€ on spurious national security grounds, as she challenges a US attempt to have her extradited from Vancouver.

In a federal court application being heard in Ottawa on Monday, Mengā€™s lawyers claimed that the documents have likely been the subject of ā€œexcessive redactions [and] overly broad claims of privilegeā€, and are likely relevant to Mengā€™s claims that she was the victim of an abuse of process in her arrest. They say her ongoing extradition hearing in the British Columbia Supreme Court should be thrown out because of this.

The lawyers want access to material provided on Mengā€™s case to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) by ā€œhuman sourcesā€, as well as the role of the CSIS officers in Mengā€™s December 1, 2018 arrest at Vancouverā€™s airport.

DNA knows your ancestral roots ā€• YouWho offers to crack that code

Shin Shang-cheol, co-founder and co-CEO of EDGC, a genetic analysis company in Incheon, is Korean. But ethnically, it is a bit more complicated: he is 47.71 percent Korean, 26.56 percent Chinese, 23.44 percent Japanese and some other roots originate from Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

Shin made this assessment based on his test results from YouWho, which can trace people back to their ancestral roots through genetic analysis. It provides details of what regions and ethnicities the users' DNA is most related to by comparing it against its reference data set.

Since the firm started the service four months ago, more than 11,000 people, including actor Lee Dong-wook, have had their DNA analyzed. It is a remarkable performance, especially given the adverse business conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Shin said in a recent interview.

"My goal is to attract more than 5 million customers in five years," he said. "In the long run, EDGC aims to provide the service to customers all around the world, especially in Asia."

Kim Jong-un seeking internal regime strength in latest speech

Questions are rising about what North Korean leader Kim Jong-un meant with his focus on nuclear deterrence at a veterans' event held this week to mark the 67th anniversary of the 1953 Korean War armistice.

"Thanks to our reliable and effective self-defensive nuclear deterrent, there will no longer be such a word as war in this land. Our national security and future will be firmly guaranteed forever," Kim was quoted as saying by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the North Korea's state media, Tuesday.

The remarks came amid rising concerns about North Korea's economy, which is believed to have been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this week, Pyongyang announced the closure of Gaeseong, a border city with South Korea, after a former defector to South Korea who, according to the North, is suspected of having COVID-19 symptoms, illegally crossed back into North Korea.

Experts told The Korea Times Tuesday that Kim's renewed focus on nuclear deterrence has several implications, internally and externally.
