Nevada sheriff tells library: Want to back Black Lives Matter? Go ahead — just don't call us for help.

Interesting turn of events

The Douglas County Public Library in Nevada wanted to step up and support the local Black Lives Matter movement — but the county sheriff responded by saying officers would not respond to 911 calls to the facility in the event of dangerous protests and rioting.

According to the Washington Post, Douglas County Sheriff Daniel Coverley threatened to stop responding to any 911 calls to the library after the facility drafted a public statement in support of the local Black Lives Matter movement.

In a newly released diversity statement, the library said, "We support #BlackLivesMatter."

Another portion of the statement added, "We resolutely assert and believe that all forms of racism, hatred, inequality, and injustice don't belong in our society."

In response, Coverley issued a statement of his own.

He wrote, "Due to your support of Black Lives Matter and the obvious lack of support or trust with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, please do not feel the need to call 911 for help. I wish you good luck with disturbances and lewd behavior."

Coverley also argued that Black Lives Matter-related protests have only caused "violence, property damage, and the closing of local businesses."

'Meant to state our inclusivity'

Douglas County Public Library Director Amy Dodson said that the message was intended to convey a message of inclusivity.

"It simply was meant to state our inclusivity at the library, that we are open and welcoming to everyone and we treat everyone equally," Dodson insisted.

A spokesperson later told the Reno Gazette Journal that despite the sheriff's bold statement, the department would, indeed continue to respond to emergency calls from the library.

In a later statement, Coverley said his action was in response to the high-stress environment under which police across the country are forced to operate.

"This has been a difficult time to be a law enforcement professional and can be disheartening when we perceive that our office may be under attack," he said Tuesday. "My response was rooted in my belief that these issues need to be openly discussed in a way that values diversity and law enforcement."

A joint statement of unity

According to the Post, Dodson and Coverley met, discussed the situation, and released a joint statement.

"Sheriff Coverley and I had a very candid conversation," Dodson said in a statement approved by the sheriff. "We agreed that we both support the people of Douglas County and this may have been an unfortunate circumstance of misunderstanding.

"The library respects and supports the work of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and appreciates everything they do to keep our community safe," the statement concluded.

Lukashenko ‘demands answers’ as KGB chief briefs him on ‘Russian mercenaries’ detained in Belarus

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has ordered a thorough probe into what he called an “emergency situation” as security chief confirmed arrests of 32 suspected ‘Wagner’ private military recruits in a televised briefing.

Lukashenko on Wednesday told the head of the Belarusian National Security Service, the KGB, to launch a transparent and unbiased probe into the incident, which the media has been quick to tie to the upcoming presidential election.

“If these are indeed Russian citizens… we must immediately contact the Russian officials and demand that they explain what is going on,” Lukashenko said at the emergency meeting of national security chiefs broadcast by local channels.

It is too early to jump to any conclusion or level accusations, Lukashenko pointed out, saying that “if they [the Russians] are innocent then it is for the better. We have no intention of smearing an allied nation.” The KGB head, Valery Vakulchik, told the president that those detained were “members of the ‘Wagner’ private military company” – a shady company providing mercenary services throughout the world said to be operating from Russia.

Smithsonian responds to Sen. Hawley about its 'whiteness' chart — and basically walks it back

It was meant to 'raise issues for discussion,' that's all

The Smithsonian Institution finally responded to Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) after the lawmaker demanded answers in a letter last week about the taxpayer-funded museum's publication of a controversial teaching curriculum on the topic of "whiteness."

Within days of its release, the "Talking About Race" curriculum came under fire over a chart in it that broadcast seemingly racist assumptions, including the notion that ideals such as hard work, objectivity, politeness, the nuclear family, and Christianity are normalized characteristics of "white dominant culture."

Soon after, the chart was yanked.

What are the details?

But last week, Hawley, not entirely satisfied, sent a letter to the institution requesting information about the initiative and specifically questioning what he viewed to be its assertion that "these attributes are actually emblems of 'structural racism' in American life [and are] to be rejected rather than embraced."

The National Museum of African American History & Culture wants to make you aware of certain signs of whiteness: In… https://t.co/YsjtzZQYJO

— Byron York (@Byron York)1594814759.0

Nearly a week after Hawley's requested deadline, Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch got back to the Missouri senator in a letter obtained by the Federalist.

In the letter, Bunch mostly dodges Hawley's pointed questions, giving non-answers, and walks back the chart's assertions.

Hawley asked: "Why did the Smithsonian suggest that self-reliance, the nuclear family, objective and rational thinking, hard work, planning, quantitative emphasis, concern about intent, and politeness are distinctly 'white' qualities?"

Bunch responded: "That content was not meant to suggest that certain qualities listed on the chart exclusively defined one particular race."

Hawley asked: "Does the Smithsonian believe the nuclear family to be a construct of white supremacy that should be deemphasized?"

Bunch responded: "No. That content was not meant to suggest that the nuclear family should be deemphasized."

In yet another place, Hawley asked: "Why did the Smithsonian suggest that white people believe 'wealth is worth' and 'bland is best,' that white people are uniquely capable of 'decision-making,' and that white people are characterized by a drive to 'master and control nature?'

Bunch responded: "That content was meant to begin and prompt discussion to engage participants in exploring various perceptions and experiences."

What else?

In his response, Bunch mostly stuck to the line that the chart didn't intend to make any specific assertions about race, but instead was intended to "foster meaningful dialogues" and "raise issues for discussion."

Bunch did acknowledge, however, that the chart "presented de-contextualized information that did not contribute to productive, informed conversations" and that "we erred in including the chart, and therefore we eliminated it from our portal."

"Additionally, we are conducting a comprehensive review of the site to ensure that it remains a helpful tool in fostering meaningful dialogues and shared understanding about race and its historical and contemporary impacts," he added.

Masks Aren't Enough: Dr. Fauci Says People Should "Probably Use Eye Shields" To Protect Against COVID-19

Americans can't seem to handle wearing masks to stop the coronavirus. Now, imagine if the CDC changed its guidelines to also call for "eye protection" like medical goggles to stop the spread of the virus (and protect your neighbor, as well as yourself).

Well, Dr. Fauci is apparently preparing to do just that.

During an interview with ABC News, Dr. Fauci said Wednesday that he may soon advise Americans to wear 'eye protection' to avoid being infected by COVID-19 as deaths along the Sun Belt climb to record highs.

"If you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it," the doctor said, before adding that it's not universally recommended, "but if you really want to be complete, you should probably use it if you can," he said.

Watch a clip from the interview below

Anybody listening to this would probably have a litany of questions for the doctor. But instead of trying to clarify this, he just said that Americans should aim to "protect as many mucosal surfaces as possible". Very informative, indeed.

Moving on, Dr. Fauci said the pre-enrollment for Moderna’s final clinical trial for a possible COVID-19 vaccine includes 19% black and 19% hispanic participants across 89 sites throughout the country.

"Now we want to get that and even more” because of how the virus has disproportionately affected minority communities with worse outcomes and higher death rates, Dr. Fauci said.

So now clinical trials are potentially being delayed so scientists can pander to the equality warriors: because shouldn't these vaccines work the same regardless of race?

But circling back to Fauci's latest recommendation: anybody who has worn a mask with glasses or sunglasses has probably experienced how they fog up repeatedly due to an individuals breath being directed upward. So anybody who follows this advice might find it difficult to see in public. And that could create some serious problems of its own.

And if we're trying to cover as many mucous membranes as possible, why not simply go all-in?

Despite a growing body of research suggesting that aerosolized particles can linger in the air longer than previously believed, the WHO hasn't done much to change its guidance:

Airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 can occur during medical procedures that generate aerosols (“aerosol generating procedures”).(12) WHO, together with the scientific community, has been actively discussing and evaluating whether SARS-CoV-2 may also spread through aerosols in the absence of aerosol generating procedures, particularly in indoor settings with poor ventilation.

Tim Cook Claims Apple Treats ‘Every Developer the Same,’ but Has Banned Conservative Apps

Apple CEO Tim Cook was questioned today by Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) about the company’s monopoly on its App Store during a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee’s antitrust panel alongside the CEOs of Facebook, Google, and Amazon. Cook claims Apple “treats every developer the same,” and that “the rules apply to everyone.” Despite his assurances, Apple has banned apps from conservative-leaning developers including Gab.

Appearing via video link before the House Judiciary Committee’s antitrust panel today, Apple CEO Tim Cook faced harsh questioning from Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) about the company’s monopoly on its App Store and the apps that iOS users can install on their devices.

Johnson began his statement saying: “Mr. Cook, with over one hundred million iPhone users in the United States alone and with Apple’s ownership of the app store giving Apple the ability to control which apps are allowed to be marketed to Apple users, you wield immense power over small businesses to grow and prosper. Apple is the sole decision-maker as to whether an app is made available to app users through Apple’s app store isn’t that correct?”

Cook replied: “If it’s a native app, yes sir,” to which Johnson stated: “Throughout our investigation, we’ve heard concerns that rules governing the app store review process are not available to app developers. The rules are made up as you go, they are arbitrarily interpreted and enforced and are subject to change whenever Apple sees fit to change. And developers have no choice but to go along with the changes or they must leave the app store. That’s an enormous amount of power, also the rules get changed to benefit Apple at the expense of app developers and the app store is said to also discriminate between app developers with similar apps on the Apple app platform, and also as to smaller app developers versus large app developers. So, Mr. Cook, does Apple not treat all app developers equally?”

Cook replied: “Sir, we treat every developer the same, we have open and transparent rules, its a rigorous process. Because we care so deeply about privacy and security and quality, we do look at every app before it goes on, but those rules apply evenly to everyone and as you can tell…” Johnson then interrupted Cook asking: “Some developers are favored over others, isn’t that correct?” To which Cook replied: “That is not correct.”
