Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg Hospitalized For "Minimally-Invasive" Surgery

Less than two weeks after her previous hospitalization, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is back in Sloan Kettering for a procedure to revise a bile-duct stent. She is expected to be released by the end of the week.

Justice Ginsburg underwent a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure today at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City to revise a bile duct scent that was originally placed at Sloan Kettering in August 2019.

According to her doctors, stent revisions are common occurrences and the procedure, performed using endoscopy and medical imaging guidance, was done to minimize the risk of future infection.

The Justice is resting comfortably and expects to be released from the hospital by the end of the week.

On May 19, I began a course of chemotherapy (gemcitabine) to treat a recurrence of cancer. A periodic scan in February followed by a biopsy revealed lesions on my liver. My recent hospitalizations to remove gall stones and treat an infection were unrelated to this recurrence.

Immunotherapy first essayed proved unsuccessful. The chemotherapy course, however, is yielding positive results. Satisfied that my treatment course is now clear, I am providing this information.

My most recent scan on July 7 indicated significant reduction of the liver lesions and no new disease. I am tolerating chemotherapy well and am encouraged by the success of my current treatment. I will continue bi-weekly chemotherapy to keep my cancer at bay, and am able to maintain an active daily routine. Throughout, I have kept up with opinion writing and all other Court work.

I have often said I would remain a member of the Court as long as I can do the job full steam. I remain fully able to do that.

At 87, Ginsburg is the oldest member of the U.S. Supreme Court, and a stalwart of its liberal wing.

The World Bank offered Belarus a $940 million coronavirus loan in June. But the conditions included that they lock down and destroy their economy.

The World Bank wanted him to lock down like Italy did in March and April.

The Belarus President Aleksander Lukashenko, considered the last tyrant in Europe, turned down the offer.

It makes you wonder how often this happens to less prosperous nations.

We saw Joe Biden do this with Ukraine demanding they fire the prosecutor investigating his son or they would not receive a US grant.

MINSK, 19 June (BelTA) – Additional conditions which do not apply to the financial part are unacceptable for Belarus, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said when speaking about external lending during a meeting to discuss support measures for the real economic sector on the part of the banking system, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko asked the participants of the meeting how things were with the provision of foreign credit assistance to Belarus. “What are our partners’ requirements? It was announced that they can provide Belarus with $940 million in so-called rapid financing. How are things here?” the head of state inquired.

At the same time, he stressed that additional conditions which do not apply to the financial part are unacceptable for the country. “We hear the demands, for example, to model our coronavirus response on that of Italy. I do not want to see the Italian situation to repeat in Belarus. We have our own country and our own situation,” the president said.

According to the president, the World Bank has showed interest in Belarus’ coronavirus response practices. “It is ready to fund us ten times more than it offered initially as a token of commendation for our efficient fight against this virus. The World Bank has even asked the Healthcare Ministry to share the experience. Meanwhile, the IMF continues to demand from us quarantine measures, isolation, a curfew. This is nonsense. We will not dance to anyone’s tune,” said the president.

Ecuador's Navy On High Alert As 260-Strong Chinese Fishing Fleet Encroaches On Protected Galapagos

Months ago we highlighted how Argentina has long sought to push a massive fleet of foreign fishing vessels, mostly Chinese, out of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which are eager to at night illegally sweep up squid and other abundant fish just off the South American coast line.

Now Ecuador is dealing with the same problem, but it's gaining increased international attention given Chinese fishing vessels are said to be encroaching around the protected and ecologically rich Galapagos Islands off Ecuador's coast.

For years these foreign vessels have been source of controversy, especially following a 2017 incident wherein a Chinese ship was caught inside the Galapagos Marine Reserve with a 300 ton load of mostly sharks, especially the extinction-threatened hammerhead.

A new FOX report describes that "A large fleet of some 260 Chinese fishing vessels has been spotted in the waters surrounding the Galápagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, the country’s navy officials said last week."

Like other countries which has a sprawling South American coastline, crucial for the local economy, the Ecuadorian Navy has remained on high alert for illegal fishing conducted by foreign vessels.

Chinese Banks Bar Clients From Buying Precious Metals

In an attempt to avoid another retail-driven momentum meltup similar to what happened with Chinese stocks earlier this month when government-media first encouraged Chinese investors to buy stocks only to backtrack days later when local markets soared sparking fears of another stock bubble on the mainland, Reuters reported that Chinese regulators and major banks have been rushing to curb precious metal trading by domestic investors to temper speculation that could send prices explosively higher, something we hinted at just last week.

The scramble to limit risks comes as gold prices hit record highs this week, spurred by investors hunting for safe haven assets in markets rattled by worries of rising coronavirus cases, lofty equity valuations, and a plunge in the U.S. dollar which prompted Goldman to contemplate if the days of the world's reserve currency are numbered.

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), the country’s largest bank said on Wednesday it would bar its clients from opening new trading positions for platinum, palladium and index products linked to precious metal from Friday. That directive, according to the lender’s customer service department, was in response to “violent price volatility” and "the need to control risks." The reality? It is neither in China's, nor any other government's interest, to see gold prices soaring as they likely would if tens of millions of Chinese speculators rushed to bid up the precious metal.

Congresswoman proposes bill to ‘expand abortion access globally’ by repealing Helms amendment

Rep. Schakowsky says 'abortion is health care' and the Helms amendment is 'deeply rooted in racism'

Illinois Democratic Rep. Jan Schakowsky is leading a House effort to eliminate the Helms Amendment, which prohibits U.S. foreign assistance funding from paying for abortion services.

The Health Care Everywhere Act of 2020 would repeal the amendment and “expand abortion access globally,” according to Schakowsky’s office. The amendment has been incorporated into the appropriations bills that Congress passes since its original adoption in 1973.

Schakowsky said that “abortion is health care” in the United States and the Helms amendment, named after former North Carolina Republican Sen. Jesse Helms, is “deeply rooted in racism.”

“It imposes our arbitrary and medically unnecessary abortion restrictions on international communities, allowing the United States to control the health care and bodily autonomy of billions Black and brown people around the world,” she said Wednesday. “Just like the Hyde Amendment, the Helms Amendment puts reproductive and economic freedom out of reach for women of color.”

Democratic Reps. Ayanna Pressley, of Massachusetts, Nita Lowey, of New York, Barbara Lee, of California, and Jackie Speier, of California, are among the co-sponsors of the bill.

Lowey, House Appropriations Committee chairwoman, called the Helms Amendment “a shameful policy” that should be repealed.

If it passes out of the Democratic-led House, the bill faces an uphill climb in the GOP-led Senate, given that most Republicans oppose the use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortion services.

Activists groups such as Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union are supporting the Health Care Everywhere Act of 2020 to repeal the Helms Amendment.

The headquarters of the Democratic Party in Phoenix, Arizona, was allegedly destroyed by arson on Thursday and days later police arrested a former volunteer they believe is responsible.

Arizona Democratic Party Chair Felecia Rotellini implied in a statement after the fire that political opponents might be to blame, but instead the police arrested a former volunteer that had been banned from the building where the headquarters is located.

"We're grateful for the response of the Phoenix Fire and Police Departments who are both still on the scene as we sort out what happened. We are relieved that no one was injured," said Rotellini.

"The fire is devastating but we refuse to let this be a distraction. We feel more empowered than ever to turn Arizona blue," she added. "Our eyes remain on the prize of electing Democrats who will put Arizonans first. Thank you to all who have sent their love and support and have reached out to help."

On Wednesday, police arrested Matthew Egler, 29, after he made several claims on social media related to the fire at the headquarters.

"Why are they coming after me so hard? Um I took out a building," said Egler in a video posted to his Twitter account.

"Because I wasn't getting any responses from the Senate," he added, "uh, I got thrown out of the Supreme Court illegally, they shut down the Senate and House buildings when I tried to go inside."

He also made other threats on the video and encouraged his viewers to commit violence on his behalf.

"I'm your elected official, if I get arrested, go bomb the police, or go find those people, go kill'em. Just go kill them," he said. "I'm saying declaration of war. So I'm sorry. Whoever is responsible, kill'em."

Egler explains a bizarre conspiracy theory claiming that he secretly married the president's daughter Ivanka Trump.

Police say that he also claimed responsibility for the fire in a tweet from his account.

Police say that surveillance video also points to his involvement with the fire. In the video they released a man can be seen tossing something into the building before it is engulfed by flames.

Police added that he had been a volunteer for the Democratic party from 2016 until 2017, but that he had been banned from the building. They did not specify why he had been banned.
