Authorities Seize IEDs In Seattle — DHS Also Confirms Their Use In Portland Protests

Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were reportedly seized from rioters in both Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon, according to authorities.

Seattle and Portland have been the scene of riots in recent months following the death of George Floyd. In Seattle, an autonomous zone – first dubbed the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” and later renamed the “Capitol Hill Organized Protest” – was set up for weeks in June.

Seattle Police Department Chief Carmen Best announced Thursday that a recent search warrant found multiple weapons, including an improvised explosive, according to Q13’s Brandi Kruse. The warrant was for an impounded van taken at Saturday’s riot.

Other weapons reportedly found included bear spray, tasers and improvised spike strips, according to Best. The items were reportedly being given to people in the crowd.

Armed Services panel cancels hearing for Pentagon policy chief nominee

The Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday canceled at the last minute the nomination hearing for Anthony J. Tata, President Donald Trump’s pick to be the Pentagon’s policy chief.

Tata, a retired Army brigadier general and regular contributor to Fox News, once called former President Barack Obama a “terrorist leader.” It is unclear if the hearing will be rescheduled.

In a tweet, Senate Armed Services Chairman James M. Inhofe, R-Okla., said many lawmakers did not yet know enough about Tata to consider him for such a position at this time.

Inhofe also said that a lack of documentation was to blame, and that he felt there was not enough time to have a hearing so close to the August recess. According to Inhofe, Trump agreed with him.

But Tata has a fairly high profile, and his nomination has drawn pushback from Democrats who have cited his past comment on Obama.

US attorney’s office claims at least 50 arrests made in Kansas City federal operation

In the past week, more than 50 arrests have been made as part of Operation LeGend, the U.S. attorney’s office claimed Tuesday evening of the federal operation focused on reducing and solving homicides in Kansas City.

“For those keeping score at home … federal agents and their local law enforcement partners in #OperationLeGendKC made 50+ arrests this past week. They seized 15 guns, heroin, meth, marijuana, pills,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri tweeted.

The office’s tweets came hours after Attorney General William Barr confirmed he “misspoke” last week when he announced more than 200 arrests had been made through the operation. Justice Department officials later clarified that a large majority of those arrests occurred under a program that started in the 2019, called Operation Relentless Pursuit.

"I am pleased and honoured to be asked to return to lead my Service. SIS plays a vital role - with MI5 and GCHQ - in keeping the British people safe and promoting UK interests overseas. I look forward to continuing that work alongside the brave and dedicated team at SIS", Moore said in an official statement on Wednesday.

Trump will be only world leader to address UN in person in September as others to send videos – envoy

US President Donald Trump hopes to address the United Nations General Assembly in person in September, his UN envoy said on Thursday. All other world leaders are expected to send videos instead of traveling to New York amid the coronavirus pandemic, Reuters said.

The annual high-level gathering had been shaping up to be a weeklong celebration of the 75th anniversary of the world body.

“We’re hoping that President Trump will actually be speaking in person in the General Assembly. He will be the only world leader to be speaking in person,” US Ambassador to the UN Kelly Craft told the Meridian International diplomacy think tank. “Obviously we’re going to be focused on human rights issues, on transparency, on accountability,” she added.

The US is traditionally the second country after Brazil to address the General Assembly, which is due to start this year on September 22.

US House Passes Measure to Cut Funding for Deployment of Federal Agents to Cities

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The House of Representatives has added an amendment to a package of appropriations bills that would cut funding to the Department of Jusrice's (DOJ) operations to send federal agents to US cities to quell violence, Congressman Ted Lieu's office said in a press release on Thursday.

“The amendment… will prohibit funds from being used for DOJ’s Operation Legend and Operation Relentless Pursuit, which are being used to send federal law enforcement officers into various cities across the United States,” the release said.

The measure was introduced by House Democrats including Lieu, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Deb Haaland and Emanuel Cleaver.

The lawmakers have denounced the Trump administration's decision to send federal law enforcement officers to crack down on protesters, saying that it infringes on their constitutional rights to demonstrate.
