It was the birth of television and televised news

that allowed Americans to SEE FOR THEMSELVES

just what our Black Americans were having to endure.

I remember watching in horror

as the police turned FIRE HOSES on PEACEFUL demonstrators.

And they really were peaceful.

I watched as priests, rabbis, nuns, and students

came to join the marches in the south.

If those marches had been Black men with weapons

our awakening populace would have been revulsed.

It was because they were peaceful

that the impact of their pleas was so great.

Everyone should look very closely at the cultures.

Like any mixing of cultures it takes time to become familiar and comfortable with each other. It takes time to trust and not fear each other.

But we took upon ourselves the work of it.

We got to know each others' ways and feelings.

Were we hated as white people?

Did they think we hated them?

It takes time to learn to trust.

Well, we did that work.

So, fuck all those people who say we didn't.

Fuck them for opening those wounds again.
