Taliban Group Says Completed Release of 1,000 Afghan Prisoners Under Agreement With US
KABUL (Sputnik) - The Taliban movement has completed the release of 1,000 Afghan prisoners as per the Doha deal agreed with Washington, Suhail Shaheen, a spokesman for the Taliban's political office in Qatar, said on Friday.
"According to the Doha Agreement, in which the Islamic Emirate promised to release 1000 prisoners in exchange for 5,000 prisoners, this number was completed by us today," Shaheen said.
Earlier in the day, the Taliban completed the process by releasing 82 prisoners in the Afghan provinces of Herat, Farah, Ghor, Nimroz, Zabul and Balkh, the spokesman added.
The Afghan government and the Taliban committed to releasing each other's prisoners — 5,000 and 1,000, respectively — as part of a peace deal negotiated by the group and the United States in the Qatari capital of Doha on 29 February, with the outlook to launch intra-Afghan talks. Kabul has so far freed only 4,400 detainees, according to the Taliban.

Fort Bragg sham marriage ring busted
Federal and North Carolina investigators closed the door on another sham marriage ring set up at Fort Bragg, NC. The investigation resulted in grand jury indictments for both active duty and former soldiers stationed at the base.
The charges state that the accused were involved in a criminal organization designed to fraudulently wed foreign nationals to soldiers. The sham marriages were arranged by a middleman.
The purpose of the fake marriages was to offer foreign citizens a clear path to citizenship and soldiers the opportunity to move off base and collect thousands of dollars in Basic Allowance for Housing pay.
The Army’s Criminal Investigative Division (CID) and Homeland Security’s Document and Benefit Fraud Task Force (DBFTF) were responsible for the investigation. The DBFTF, based in Raleigh, has members from several state and federal agencies.
Investigators found that this latest marriage scam involved both current and former service members in the Fort Bragg area and foreign nationals mainly from Ghana, Nigeria, and the U.K.
The exact number of people involved was not disclosed, but court documents point to the involvement of at least seven known participants, and the possibility of at least 10-15 fraudulent marriages. The grand jury issued more than 10 subpoenas to individuals involved in the case.
A Ghanian citizen, Joshua Kwame Asane, 45, is accused of marrying a soldier with the sole intention of gaining legal permanent residency in the U.S. He has been charged with conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, marriage fraud, visa fraud, false statement in an immigration proceeding, and preventing testimony of a person in an official proceeding. If convicted he faces a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison and $1.25 million in fines.

Man fires gun in Miami hotel because people weren’t social distancing, police say
A South Florida man fired a gun at a Miami Beach hotel after police say he became enraged over a mother and son’s lack of social distancing.
Douglas Marks, 29, was arrested Tuesday on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, use of a firearm to commit a felony and discharging a firearm in public. Jail records show he’s being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on $11,000 bond.
The incident occurred Monday evening in the lobby of Crystal Beach Suites on Collins Avenue. Marks noticed a woman, later identified as Veronica Pena, sitting on a couch with her son. He approached the two and told them to leave.
“You all aren’t social distancing,” Marks barked, according to the arrest report.
Ignoring him, Pena and her son didn’t move. She then overheard Marks say, “Let me take care of them, I have two people not following directions,” before he grabbed a black firearm and let off several shots, according to Miami Beach police.

Pilatus banker given US guarantee over immigration removal
Court vacates guilty verdict • US Attorney’s Office tells court it will not seek or cooperate with any immigration removal proceedings against Pilatus banker Ali Sadr Hasheminjead
US authorities will not “seek or cooperate with” any attempts to remove Pilatus bank owner Ali Sadr Hasheminejad from the country in immigration removal proceedings, after the Department of Justice moved for the removal of a jury’s guilty verdict on sanctions-busting and fraud charges, and vacated records of his charges deleted from the Department of Justice’s website.
The banker on 17 July had his guilty verdict vacated by the US courts, with his case dismissed with prejudice and a court declaring that there was never a judgment of conviction in this case. “The jury’s verdict is vacated, and has no legal effect. Sadr’s new trial motion is granted. The government’s application for an order of nolle prosequi… is granted. The verdict is hereby vacated and the indictment is hereby dismissed with prejudice.”
Hasheminejad had been found guilty of evading US economic sanctions by a jury in the United States in March this year. He was arrested in February 2018 at Dulles airport, accused of using the US financial system to launder over $115 million in payments from a construction project in Venezuela that his father’s construction company was involved in, back to his family’s companies in Europe.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Friday ordered the release of 500 Taliban prisoners as part of a new ceasefire that could lead into long-delayed peace talks.
Ghani said the militants would be freed during the Eid al-Adha holiday, which started Friday and has prompted a national ceasefire for three days.
The release would complete the government's pledge to free 5,000 Taliban fighters as outlined in a deal the insurgents signed with Washington, he said.
"To show goodwill and accelerate the peace talks, we will release 500 Taliban prisoners in response to the group's three-day ceasefire announcement," Ghani said in an Eid speech.
However, the 500 inmates are not on the original list of 5,000 demanded by the Taliban.
Kabul authorities have already released 4,600 of those prisoners but are hesitating about the release of the final 400, deeming them too dangerous.
"I do not have the right to decide on the release of those 400 Taliban prisoners who are accused of serious crimes," Ghani said, adding that a gathering of Afghan elders would decide their fate.

Would volunteers working at voting booths be able to identify voters wearing face masks and goggles from pictures on Voter I.D.?
Fauci’s Gulag Goggle Gimmick
Though he hasn’t yet made it mandatory but is so far only suggesting it, will the face mask and goggle wearing advocated by Dr. Anthony Fauci make this a chilling part of the future:
Caller: “Two men just broke into our house and shot my husband!”
Police: Can you give us a description of them?”
Caller: “Hard to do because both were wearing face masks and goggles.”
Not so farfetched in home invasions of the future if Dr. Fauci gets his way.
“Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, this week said wearing goggles or an eye shield in addition to a face mask would provide better protection against the coronavirus, according to a report. (Fox News, July 30, 2020)
“Theoretically you should protect all of the mucosal surfaces [eyes, nose, mouth], so if you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it,” he said in an interview with ABC News on Instagram Wednesday.
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention already recommends wearing a face mask that covers the nose and mouth in public, but the virus can also enter through the eyes.
“Fauci recommended goggles in addition to a face mask for those who want “perfect protection” from the COVID-19, but admitted it’s not “universally recommended.”

Murky Money From Iran Puts Pablo Iglesias in the Crosshairs of Spanish Judiciary
360 Global Media, a production company linked to Podemos, received at least 9.3 million euros from companies receiving money directly from Iran
Podemos, the party financed by Chavismo in Spain, is under the scrutiny of the Spanish justice system due to illicit financing scandals, not only from Venezuela but also from Iran.
According to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, 360 Global Media, a production company linked to Podemos, received at least 9.3 million euros from companies receiving money directly from Iran.
According to the reports of the Executive Service of the Money Laundering and Monetary Infractions Commission, the 16 companies under suspicion made 67 deposits in the accounts of the producer in Spain from 2012 to 2015.
But the production company not only benefited from illegal transactions, investigations indicate that at least 23 bank transfers were made from 360 Global Media’s bank accounts to the accounts of the current vice president of Spain, Pablo Iglesias, for a total of 93,000 euros.
The former legal head of Podemos, José Manuel Calvente, presented evidence against the far-left party to the Civil Guard. Consequently, the evidence was handed over to the Court of Instruction number 42 in Madrid, by Juan José Escalonilla, who summoned Calvente to testify as a witness and to ratify his complaint.

Coast Guard offloads $38.5 million in cocaine in San Juan
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Heriberto Hernandez (WPC-1114) offloaded approximately 1,375 kilograms of cocaine at Coast Guard Sector San Juan Wednesday, following the disruption of a drug smuggling go-fast in the Caribbean Sea.
The seized drug shipment is estimated to have a wholesale value of more than $38.5 million.
The interdiction was the result of multi-agency efforts in support of U.S. Southern Command’s enhanced counter-narcotics operations in the Western Hemisphere, and during Operation CASTNET II, in coordination with Joint Task Force East (JTF-E).

Syrian Army seizes large amount of weapons being smuggled to militants in Idlib
BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:20 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) managed to thwart an attempt by a group of militants to smuggle weapons through the government territories to the Idlib Governorate this week.
According to the SAA, their forces were able to stop the transport before it could reach the militant lines in Idlib.
The militants attempted to transport a large quantity of artillery shells, ammunition, and other military supplies, but were stopped by the Syrian Army in the Hama Governorate.
This latest bust comes just days after a similar smuggling attempt was foiled by the Syrian Arab Army in northwestern Syria.
Despite having a supply line from Turkey, the militants have tried to smuggle the weapons they previously hid from the SAA to the Idlib Governorate, amid the ongoing turmoil in northwestern Syria.
