$8.6 Million Stolen from RI Unemployment Fund
CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — The NBC 10 I-Team has learned that fraud has hit Rhode Island's unemployment insurance system hard, to the tune of $8.6 million, according the state Department of Labor and Training.
DLT Director Scott Jensen told the I-Team that 60 percent of that money was from federal funding (the same place that $600 a week bonus came from) and 40 percent from the Rhode Island unemployment insurance trust fund, which is supported by employer contributions.
“That is a lot of money and that is by far the highest dollar amount we’ve ever had in fraud,” said Jensen.
