Maddie suspect's 'secret cellar': Madeleine McCann police dig up basement beneath foundations of demolished building on Christian Brueckner's old allotment that has remained untouched since the year toddler vanished

Madeleine McCann investigators have found a hidden cellar at the German allotment where kidnapping suspect Christian Brueckner allegedly lived in 2007.

Police discovered the basement in the foundations of a building near Hanover which neighbours say was demolished in late 2007 or 2008, shortly after Brueckner left.

The cellar was not filled in when the building above it was torn down, meaning it could have been untouched since the year Madeleine vanished from her Praia da Luz holiday apartment in May 2007.

Detectives have been removing slabs of building materials in a two-day search of the vegetable garden, accompanied by specialist search dogs that look for dead bodies and computer equipment.

Officers were seen carrying large blue bags away from the site during the search on Wednesday.

Wolfgang Kossack, 73, who owns the plot next to Brueckner's former allotment, told MailOnline that Brueckner had lived off-grid at the site in 2007 and talked about planning his return to southern Europe.

Mr Kossack said he only realised the link to Brueckner this week when police started digging up the allotment, saying: 'I remembered his face from the pictures in the news. And I remember his van and his dogs. I had completely forgotten about him up until then.'

Last month a former friend of Brueckner reportedly claimed the kidnap suspect told him he had a cellar at a different property which he wanted to line with metal sheets 'like Josef Fritzl's'.

Brueckner - who is currently in jail in northern Germany - is suspected of killing Madeleine after she vanished in May 2007 - the same year that Brueckner lived at the allotment.

Local media says the search at the allotment is due to end tonight, but police have not revealed what they are looking for or whether they have found it.

Ellen DeGeneres is telling show executives she's had enough and is ready to call it quits as staffers slam her apology and claim she's the problem as star hides away and her wife Portia DeRossi walks their dogs

Earlier this month, one current and 10 former employees at the Ellen DeGeneres Show revealed there is a toxic work environment fostered at the show

Now former staffers have accused Ellen of 'turning a blind eye' to rampant sexual misconduct by senior-level producers on her hit daytime TV talk show

DailyMail.com, can reveal that the host is telling executives at Telepictures and Warner Bros that she has had enough and wants to walk away from the show

'She feels she can't go on and the only way to recover her personal brand from this is to shut down the show,' a source said

This comes as staff at the Ellen DeGeneres Show are hitting back at the eponymous talk show host for shifting the blame to her executive producers

Ellen recently sent her staff a memo in which she wrote she was 'taking steps to correct' issues with her employees after several complaints

'Don't think for a minute anything she has said in that apology means anything. She created and enabled this toxic culture to go on for so long,' a staffer said

An internal investigation has been launched by WarnerMedia

Executive Producers of the Ellen DeGeneres Show Mary Connelly (left), Andy Lassner (center), and Ed Glavin have been accused of fostering a hostile work environment. 'If anyone had come to her or those three vile EPs [executive producers] to complain, they would've been fired,' a staffer said

Sen. Mazie Hirono, who has stage 4 kidney cancer, fights tears during heartfelt healthcare plea

2017

Sen. Mazie Hirono, a Democrat from Hawaii, called on her Republican colleagues Thursday night to vote against the Obamacare repeal, and show the American people the same compassion they showed her after her cancer diagnosis in May.

Prior to the Senate narrowly defeating the bill that would have repealed portions of Obamacare, Hirono stood in the Senate chamber and begged her colleagues to take a step back from politics and focus on Americans.

She said repealing parts of the Affordable Care Act would hurt the "sickest, poorest amongst us."

Hirono said when she was diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer many of her Republican colleagues offered their condolences and wrote her notes sharing their own battles with cancer.

"You showed me your care, you showed me your compassion, where is that tonight?" she said banging her fist on the table. "…I find it hard to believe we can sit here and vote on a bill that is going to hurt millions and millions of people in our country."

During the Second World War, when everyone was thinking of disasters and tragedy, Matisse was painting only flowers. We need to be painting and we need beauty … We’re living in a time of death. But such an important time. We have to confront fears of the unknown. A time of mental and physical transformation. Embrace this!

Marina Abramović and Nikhil Chopra

Breaking the Fourth Wall: From Witnessing to Participation

The ‘godmother of performance art’, Marina Abramović burst onto the ’70s art scene with cathartic performances that pushed the envelope on spectator participation and personal safety in unexpected and unprecedented ways.

As part of its Art as Witness theme, MAP is pleased to present her, in conversation with India’s most well-known performance artist, Nikhil Chopra. Together they will examine the ways in which, over the course of a five-decade-long career, Abramović has used her own body as subject, object, and medium; her relationship to the public; and the nature of witnessing in long durational and immaterial art.
