CDC director acknowledges hospitals have a monetary incentive to overcount coronavirus deaths

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield agreed that some hospitals have a monetary incentive to overcount coronavirus deaths as they do deaths for other diseases.

“I think you’re correct in that we’ve seen this in other disease processes, too. Really, in the HIV epidemic, somebody may have a heart attack but also have HIV — the hospital would prefer the [classification] for HIV because there’s greater reimbursement,” Redfield said during a House panel hearing Friday when asked by Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer about potential “perverse incentives.”

Redfield continued: “So, I do think there’s some reality to that. When it comes to death reporting, though, ultimately, it’s how the physician defines it in the death certificate, and … we review all of those death certificates. So I think, probably it is less operable in the cause of death, although I won’t say there are not some cases. I do think though [that] when it comes to hospital reimbursement issues or individuals that get discharged, there could be some play in that for sure.”

Questions have been raised about coronavirus counting in hospitals across the country, and conflicting conclusions have been raised about whether or not deaths are being accurately counted.

A Yale study concluded that the overall coronavirus death toll in the United States is a “substantial undercount” of the actual number; White House coronavirus response team member Dr. Deborah Birx suggested in May that deaths are being overcounted by 25%.

There appear to be cases where the opposite has happened. An investigation in Florida found that several deaths were wrongly attributed to the virus, including the case of a man who died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The CDC’s website lists over 3,700 coronavirus deaths characterized as "intentional and unintentional injury, poisoning and other adverse events." In Texas, more than 3,000 people were recently removed from the overall coronavirus count because they were never actually tested but considered “probable” cases.

On July 5th of this year – following weeks of steady decline – the United States recorded 263 deaths from COVID-19. This was the lowest daily toll in nearly three and half months. The July 5th figure represented a 90 percent drop from the peak which occurred April 21st. On that day there were 2748 deaths from COVID-19 (see worldometers.info for data).

The sharp decrease in COVID deaths was obviously a most welcome development. One would expect it would have quickly generated a spate of celebratory headlines.

However, this is not what happened that day.

Montgomery County Health Officer Travis Gayles issued the directive on Friday, declaring that "any school located in Montgomery County, Maryland that are not public schools [sic]" are "prohibited from physically reopening for in-person instruction through October 1, 2020."

Among the institutions forbidden from reopening are "all private pay schools, schools affiliated with religious institutions, or schools that are otherwise considered to be independent schools," the order says.

Gayles cited "increases in COVID-19 transmission rates in the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the State of Maryland" as the justification for his order, though county data indicate that the average number of daily new cases and deaths, as well as the total number of COVID-19 hospitalizations there, are both at the lowest they've been in nearly four months. The percentage of positive tests in the county, meanwhile, has plummeted from a high of over 34% in April to under 4% now.

Gayles's order — which follows the county's recent decision to keep public school campuses closed through at least January — goes against the guidance of numerous public health officials and medical authorities, who in recent weeks have been strongly urging governments to re-open schools for in-person learning.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield has lately been calling for re-opened schools in the fall, deeming shuttered campuses a graver threat to children's health than the coronavirus. Last month he said that children's risk of fatality from COVID-19 is literally "one in a million."

The American Academy of Pediatrics, meanwhile, said in June that it "strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school."

Washington, D.C. attendees to the Atlanta funeral of the late Rep. John Lewis are exempt from following the District of Columbia's strict quarantine rules after returning home from Georgia, the D.C. mayor's office says.

Lewis, a longtime member of Congress and one of the major figures of the American civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, died on July 17 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. After lying in state at the United States Capitol, his body was returned to Atlanta for a funeral at that city's historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Among the attendees at that funeral were dozens of members of Congress, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senators Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Maryland House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.).

Under current District of Columbia rules, all of those individuals would normally be required to self-quarantine for two weeks upon returning to D.C. City Mayor Muriel Bowser's recent quarantine order dictates that any individual traveling to a "high-risk area" for "non-essential" reasons must self-quarantine for 14 days upon entering the District.

The entire state of Georgia is among the locations deemed "high-risk" by the mayor's office. But a spokeswoman for Bowser confirmed that attendees of the funeral would not have to follow the mayor's quarantine rules.

"Government activity is essential, and the Capitol of the United States is exempt from the Mayor’s Order," Bowser Press Secretary Susana Castillo told Just the News on Friday.

Asked if Lewis's funeral constituted "government activity," Castillo responded: "Yes."

Asked if attendees at non-government funerals in high-risk areas would have to self-quarantine upon returning to the District, Castillo again responded: "Yes."

Roger Stone and his supporters can breathe a sigh of relief following President Trump’s commutation of his sentence.

But it is clear the Deep State isn’t done.

And they just doubled down by launching a new plan to jail Roger Stone.

Anybody who has been following the news understands that the Deep State is targeting Roger Stone for one reason.

That’s because he was a vital supporter to President Donald Trump going into the 2016 election.

In fact, Stone had been pushing for Trump to run for President for decades, even running his very short-lived 2000 attempt for the presidency with the Reform Party.

The Deep State succeeded in convicting Stone with seven different charges relating to the provenly false Russia collusion scandal.

If President Donald Trump had not stepped in, Stone would be currently serving a three-year sentence in prison for those charges.

The fact that he isn’t is infuriating to the Deep State, and especially to the prosecutors who worked so hard to ensure he would face that steep sentence.

So naturally, those prosecutors are working to get a second chance at throwing Stone behind bars.

Andrew Weissmann, who was a top prosecutor in Stone’s case, has taken to The New York Times to propose a new idea to force Stone behind bars.

Weissmann alleges that the only reason that Stone didn’t spend any time behind bars is because he didn’t squeal on President Trump, writing, “Mr. Stone was sentenced to spend 40 months in prison until he got his reward for keeping his lips sealed.”

He bases this on Stone publicly stating that he would not “bear false witness” against President Trump, meaning that he would not lie to them in order to get a more lenient sentence.

After all, the Deep State ultimately wanted Stone to implicate Trump in crimes above all, and gave him the sentence he received because he would not do so.

Weissmann states that Stone should face further charges after January, 20 2021, which is the day Trump will leave office if he is not re-elected.

“The president’s commutation does not and could not apply to future crimes by Mr. Stone, including lying under oath to a grand jury,” he wrote, noting that “federal charges need not be lodged until, say, Jan. 20, 2021.”

He also considers the idea of states charging Stone with crimes as well, stating that, “State charges could be brought sooner.”

It is clear that he wants nothing more than Stone to be put behind bars.

And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that is all based on the fact that Stone supports President Trump.

Boxes of unopened coronavirus food for poor found dumped in Queens

Piles of unopened boxes of emergency city coronavirus meals meant for the poor were found dumped on the side of a Queens underpass Monday.

The outrageous sign of waste — after Mayor Bill de Blasio predicted up to 2 million New Yorkers would go hungry this summer amid the pandemic — was enough to make passers-by sick.

“Why wouldn’t you go give it to people in the streets?” local resident Juan Heno said of the 34 brown cardboard boxes of food piled on top of each other along a concrete wall below the Queens Midtown Expressway, around 57-45 74th St., in Middle Village.

“The city has a lot of homeless right now,” Heno noted to The Post.

The resident said he spotted the boxes — slapped with white labels and black lettering reading, “GetFoodNYC, COVID-19 Emergency Food Distribution, Packed on July 24th, Delivery by July 31st” — in the broiling heat around 9:30 a.m.

He said he called the city’s 311 hot line and was told someone would pick them up — but they were still laying out in the sun more than eight hours later.

Inside the boxes — part of the de Blasio administration’s much-touted program to feed the hungry during the country’s economic crisis — were plastic containers filled with food.

Some of the containers, marked “VEGETARIAN” and “CONTAINS NUTS,” held a bag of multigrain pretzel Pepperidge Farm goldfish, what appeared to be a peanut-butter and jelly sandwich and a small plastic container with part of a granola bar.

Another meal package held dried fruit and nuts, a granola bar, dried edamame and a bagel in plastic with a small cream-cheese packet.

The office of local city Councilman Robert Holden told The Post that a constituent texted photos of the wasted food to them and that he was reaching out to the city to see what happened.

“This is absolutely inexcusable, no matter how this food got there,” the councilman told The Post.

“So many New Yorkers have been desperate for a little extra food to help them get by during this pandemic, so it’s unfathomable to see perfectly good meals go to waste like this. This demands a thorough investigation by City Hall immediately.”

Neighborhood resident Sue Purcarin was just as distressed.

“It’s supposed to go to people,” she said of the food, which she saw by the side of the road in the afternoon. “This is horrible.

“Somebody didn’t want to do their job, and they decided, ‘OK, let me just dump it here.’ ”

The city Sanitation Department, which transports the food, said in a statement, “This is unacceptable, and no driver will be paid for incomplete deliveries.

“We have distributed over 100 million free emergency meals, but anyone who misses a delivery should let us know immediately at nyc.gov/getfood or by calling 311 so we can get them the food they need.”

Poll: 85 Percent of Voters Say Crime Is a ‘Serious’ Problem in America

The vast majority of registered American voters say crime is a “very serious” or “somewhat serious” problem in the United States, a new survey reveals.

A Huffington Post/YouGov survey of 1,000 U.S. adults shows huge public concern over a crime wave hitting major U.S. cities such as New York City, Milwaukee, Portland, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Atlanta.

Of those registered to vote, about 85 percent said crime is a “very serious” or “somewhat serious” problem across the nation — including 83 percent of black Americans, 85 percent of white Americans, and 79 percent of Hispanic Americans.

The issue cuts across party lines, with about 81 percent of Democrat voters saying crime is a “serious” issue at the moment, along with 80 percent of swing voters and 90 percent of Republicans.

As has been found in polling and surveys for decades, the issue of crime is more related to class than race in the U.S. For instance, while the overwhelming majority of all racial groups agree that crime is a serious problem, voters who are wealthy are vastly less likely to call crime a “very serious” problem.

Just 37 percent of Americans earning $100,000 or more a year say crime is a “very serious” problem. In contrast, those earning $50,000 or less a year — the working poor, working class, and lower-middle-class — say by a 47 percent plurality that crime is a “very serious” problem right now.

In the 2020 presidential election, voters by big majorities say crime will inform their vote for either President Trump or Democrat nominee Joe Biden. About 74 percent said crime is important to them this election cycle, including 67 percent of black Americans, 66 percent of white Americans, and 65 percent of Hispanic Americans.

Crime is playing a vital role in the decision-making of the working poor, working class, and lower-middle-class, the survey finds. More than 60 percent of those earning $50,000 or less a year said the issue of crime is either “very important” or “somewhat important” to their vote this year.

The poll comes as Biden has had to grapple with the Democrat Party’s demands to defund police departments across the U.S. Biden lost the support of the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) who switched their endorsement to Trump this month after endorsing former President Obama and Biden in 2008 and 2012.

Grassroots conservatives close to the president have urged him to take a tough-on-crime agenda to the American people with an intensified focus on reducing violent crime. In a meeting on Friday, Trump told NAPO bosses that there is a silent majority of Americans who support them.

Bokhari: By Suppressing Medical Debate, It Is Twitter That Endangers Americans

Twitter has once again acted as judge, juror and executioner. For four days, Twitter prevented the @BreitbartNews twitter account from posting, only restoring its permissions earlier today. This is in no small part because Twitter dragged its feet on Breitbart News’ appeal

Twitter initially locked Breitbart News’ account because it posted a video of a press conference featuring Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) and licensed doctors sharing their views and opinions on coronavirus and the medical response to the pandemic. The event was held by the organization America’s Frontline Doctors and organized by the Tea Party Patriots.

In short, Twitter has punished a news organization for posting a video of a live-streaming of a press conference held by a congressman and licensed medical doctors.

At the event, some of the doctors shared their opinion on hydroxychloroquine, highlighting it as a potentially helpful treatment in fighting COVID-19. Once doctor called it a “cure.”

Because Breitbart News’ Twitter account carried a video livestream of their comments, Twitter accused Breitbart of “spreading misleading and potentially harmful information related to COVID-19.”

As an aside, Breitbart News is a news company, not a licensed medical professional and has no editorial position of the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19. But for Twitter (which is also not a licensed medical professional) to assert that the video contained potentially harmful information rings hollow. Hydroxychloroquine is not Tide Pods; it’s not something people can simply go down to the local drugstore, buy, and ingest without medical advice and supervision.

In the United States, hydroxychloroquine is a legal, FDA approved medication available only by prescription; so a person would have to go to their doctor and get it prescribed after making a decision with their own doctor whether or not to take hydroxychloroquine.

And, whether Twitter likes it or not, or thinks it should be otherwise, doctors are prescribing hydroxychloroquine on an off-label basis for COVID-19; Twitter trying to pretend it is not happening or wishing it was not happening is self-sophistry.

Twitter has demanded that Breitbart News delete the following tweets before restoring access to the account. Breitbart appealed that decision, and pending appeal has been locked out of its account. Incredibly, Twitter took almost three full days to reply to Breitbart’s appeal – meaning time and traffic lost during a fast-moving election season. When Twitter finally did respond it denied the appeal.

Twitter then demanded that Breitbart News delete the following tweets before restoring access to the account and that Breitbart serve a 12-hour “time out” — meaning even more time and traffic lost during a fast-moving election season.

Twitter’s actions have public health implications. The tech giant is preventing the public, including the critically ill, from receiving information from physicians with first-hand experience treating COVID-19 patients. Twitter’s censorship denies the public access to information — and that can put lives, health, and well-being of Americans at risk.
