Pompeo: Trump to Act on Chinese Software Companies in Coming Days
President Donald Trump will take action shortly on Chinese software companies that are feeding data directly to the Beijing government, posing a risk to U.S. national security, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday.
"President Trump has said 'enough' and we're going to fix it and so he will take action in the coming days with respect to a broad array of national security risks that are presented by software connected to the Chinese Communist Party," Pompeo said on Fox News Channel's "Sunday Morning Futures."
On Friday, Trump said he would ban Chinese-owned TikTok from the U.S. following concerns about data collection by the popular music-video app, escalating the administration’s clash with China.
“As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States,” the president told reporters Friday night. Asked when it would happen, he said: “Soon, immediately. I mean essentially immediately.”

UK Conservative MP arrested after aide accuses him of rape
London’s Metropolitan Police, without naming the politician, said the allegations related to four separate incidents

An MP and former minister from Britain’s ruling Conservative Party has been arrested after a parliamentary aide accused him of rape, sexual assault and coercive control, according to reports Saturday.
The politician was not named but the Metropolitan Police said in a statement that it had begun an investigation.
“On Friday, 31 July, the Metropolitan Police Service received allegations relating to four separate incidents involving allegations of sexual offences and assault,” said the police.
“A man in his 50s was arrested on Saturday, 1 August on suspicion of rape. He has been released on bail to return on a date in mid-August.”
Reports of the arrest also appeared in The Sunday Times newspaper, which said the allegations had been raised with a senior Conservative party official.

Australia’s government has ordered Facebook and Alphabet’s Google to share revenue generated from news articles, adding to growing global regulatory and political pushback against the digital giants.
The two companies will have to negotiate with traditional media on remuneration in good faith, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said Friday.
If no agreement is reached, there will be a binding arbitration process and penalties for breaching the code of up to A$10 million (US$7 million) or 10 per cent of local revenue.
The move aims to correct what the government says is a power imbalance between two of the world’s most profitable companies and a local media industry that’s bleeding jobs as it loses advertising revenue to digital platforms. It follows measures elsewhere in the world, including in France where antitrust regulator in April ordered Google to pay media companies to display snippets of articles.

Mid-flight fisticuffs over maskless passengers

Two passengers on the KLM flight reportedly became physical after refusing to wear masks during the journey to Spain. Passengers and crew worked together to restrain the two men, who reportedly had been drinking.
Footage of the insane mid-flight fracas shows multiple passengers squeezed into the airplane’s aisle as they shout and exchange punches. The two men, who are not believed to be Dutch citizens, were reportedly detained by authorities once the plane landed in Spain.

Bloomberg-backed gun safety group endorsing Democrats in 14 North Texas statehouse races
A national gun advocacy group’s strategy to flip the state House in 2020 relies heavily on races in North Texas.
Everytown for Gun Safety, which has financial backing from Michael Bloomberg and has pledged to pump $8 million into Texas’ state and federal races this cycle, endorsed 26 Democratic state House candidates Thursday. More than half of them are competing for seats in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
The group also announced plans on Thursday to invest $3.5 million in digital advertising for Texas House and congressional races. Everytown did not name the specific contests.
The move comes almost a year after mass shootings in El Paso and Midland-Odessa.
Everytown said its decision to focus on North Texas is based on polling that shows gun violence prevention is one of the most “persuasive attacks” on GOP representatives in competitive districts.

Chinese national pleads guilty to stealing trade secrets from Nationwide Children’s Hospital
A Chinese national admitted Thursday in federal court to stealing scientific trade secrets for personal gain and for her country while she worked as a researcher at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Li Chen, 47, who had lived in Dublin, Ohio, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit theft of trade secrets and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The plea was entered via video conference with Judge Sarah D. Morrison of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio in Columbus. Her sentencing date has not yet been set.
“Chen betrayed her employer of 10 years by stealing trade secrets from this American institution and transferring them to China after receiving payments from the Chinese government,” said David M. DeVillers, the U.S. Attorney in Columbus.
Chen and her husband, accused co-conspirator Yu Zhou, worked for 10 years in separate medical research labs at the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Zhou worked there from 2007 to 2017 while Chen was employed from 2008 to 2018.
The couple was arrested in July 2019 in California, charged with conspiring to steal at least five trade secrets related to exosome research while they were employed at Nationwide Children’s. Zhou’s case is still pending.

India's Anti-Terror Body Arrests Six in Diplomatic Gold Smuggling Case
New Delhi (Sputnik): Last month, 30 kgs of gold, worth $2 million (INR 150 million) was seized from a diplomatic cargo addressed to a person in the UAE's Consulate-General by customs officials at Thiruvananthapuram Airport in Kerala.
India's anti-terror probe body, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested six people in connection with a diplomatic gold smuggling case in Kerala, a senior official said on Sunday. The number of people arrested in the case now stands at 10.
The NIA has also conducted a series of searches at six places connected with the case, including the home addresses of the people arrested.
"Earlier this week [30 July], our team nabbed two accused identified as Jalal A.M. and Said Alavi for conspiring with an already arrested accused Ramees K.T. and for smuggling gold through diplomatic baggage addressed to the UAE Consulate at Thiruvananthapuram," an NIA official said on Sunday.
