"ST. MARYS, Kansas (ChurchMilitant.com) - The Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) is discouraging its members from speaking to investigators, even as a criminal investigation into sex abuse cover-up is underway.
In a recent letter authored by U.S. District bursar Fr. Scott Gardner obtained by Church Militant, the priest warns the St. Marys, Kansas community against speaking with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) without a lawyer present.
The KBI has been investigating the SSPX, along with all Catholic dioceses in Kansas, for at least a year as part of its criminal probe into clergy sex abuse and cover-up.
"If approached, decline to speak to them without an attorney present," Gardner insists, going on to offer his email as well as that of SSPX attorney Dan Lane. "If you have already spoken to law enforcement, please let us know right away."
Gardner accuses the KBI of speaking with priests, staff and employees of St. Marys "without our legal staff being present," claiming that investigators "have already ignored this warning."
Church Militant reached out to the KBI for a response to the allegation but received no response as of press time.
There is no legal requirement for state investigators to inform attorneys when questioning witnesses. Witnesses are free to speak with law enforcement with or without lawyers present, and thus critics see the letter as further evidence of the SSPX's heavyhanded tactics to control and direct the investigation, and prevent witnesses from offering potentially incriminating information.
"[Y]ou are always entitled to have legal representation at any interview, and all Priests, staff, and employees must insist on this if contacted," Gardner orders.
The tenor of the letter stands in stark contrast to the SSPX's promises of "transparency" and "accountability" stated on its website, and instead appears as an attempt to clamp down on communications with the KBI.

Camden’s Roman Catholic diocese suspends payments
to clergy abuse victims, citing COVID-19 financial stress

"Citing financial losses resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Camden said Friday that it would halt payments from a clergy sex-abuse victim fund that has paid out nearly $7.6 million.
In a statement, the diocese said it had suffered a “precipitous decline in revenue” and was rapidly approaching a point where it would not be able to continue to borrow money to pay authorized awards.
“These steps are necessary in order to maintain the critical programs the Diocese of Camden continues to provide for the communities it serves, which, now more than ever, are so essential,” it read."

"COVINGTON, Ky. – Dean McCoy said he had been waiting for this day for more than three decades.
On Friday, the Diocese of Covington named 90 religious and lay employees with substantiated allegations of sexual abuse of a minor while working at the diocese.
McCoy said he was one of the victims.
McCoy told the WCPO 9 I-Team that the Rev. Herman Kamlage sexually abused him more than 30 years ago. Kamlage is one of the priests on the Covington list.
“My reaction to the list being released is: it's a long time past due," McCoy said. "It should have been released a long time ago and given people an opportunity to address the situation at that time.”
The diocese’s list includes 59 priests, six religious brothers, five nuns and 20 lay people/deacons. Most of the priests taught at Catholic schools and served at parishes or at other positions in the diocese. All of the brothers, two of the nuns and 14 of the lay people/deacons were teachers.
Kamlage, who died in 2018, served as a pastor or assistant at eight parishes in Northern Kentucky over nearly 40 years, according to the diocese.
In a statement, Bishop Roger Foys expressed "sorrow and shame." Foys also said he hoped releasing the names would bring healing to victims.

The diocese’s announcement follows a WCPO 9 I-Team investigation last year. The I-Team named 22 priests and brothers on the diocese's list. The I-Team list did not include nuns and lay people."

"A slew of lawsuits filed Friday accuse the Boy Scouts of America with tolerating sexual abuse for decades — and say the systemic mistreatment of boys went on since the organization’s founding in 1910.
The 21 new lawsuits in Manhattan Supreme Court charge 14 adult scout leaders with sexually abusing children in numerous instances dating to 1954.
The abuse has gone on through the entire 110 year history of U.S. scouting, the lawsuits say.
”Throughout that time, many of these children have been subjected to horrific acts of sexual abuse by adults who gained access to them through scouting organizations,” says one of the lawsuits. “This widespread abuse of children in scouting programs has been a systemic crisis that goes back since these organizations first existed.”
“These cases show a widespread, systematic, decades long problem of kids getting molested in Scouting,” said Mike Finnegan, one of the lawyers for the plaintiffs.
“The time is now for the truth to come out and survivors’ voices to be heard.”"
