Portland records highest number of monthly murders in ‘OVER 30 YEARS’ as city slashes police budget

Portland saw the highest number of homicides in July in more than three decades, officials say. The uptick in violence has strained police resources, which have already suffered from budget cuts.

The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) is investigating 15 murders that occurred in July, making the month one of the deadliest for the city in recent memory, local newspaper the Oregonian reported. The city has registered 24 homicides so far this year, meaning that last month alone accounted for more than half of the city’s violent deaths in 2020.

July also saw 63 shootings, compared to 28 during the same month last year, the PPB said.

Police Chief Chuck Lovell expressed concern that the surge in murders was thinning out limited police resources, as officers who would normally patrol the city had been reassigned to help with investigations.

Dry-run for World War III? Covid-19 is practice for future biological warfare, says top Russian doctor

The Covid-19 pandemic has functioned as a “rehearsal for biological warfare,” says a leading Russian pediatrician, who believes that the rapidly-spreading virus was a test for the world's healthcare systems.

In an interview with Forbes, Professor Leonid Roshal, President of the Research Institute of Emergency Pediatric Surgery and Traumatology, explained that not all nations were ready for a mass influx of patients, and their lack of preparation has been exposed by the pandemic.

“When I analyze the current situation, I understand that this is a rehearsal for biological warfare,” he explained. “I am not saying that this virus was created by humans… but this is a test of the health system's strength, including the country's biological defense.”

India to Sell Stakes Worth $3.3 Billion in Public Banks as Earning Dips to Lowest, Source Says

New Delhi (Sputnik): As COVID-19 has slowed down the Indian economy, the government’s revenue collections have not been matching the pandemic-induced expenditures. The government needs funds to roll out a $12 billion economic stimulus package without inflating the fiscal deficit beyond a certain level.

The Indian government is planning to sell a part of its stake in some select state-owned banks to raise $3.3 billion amid the challenges posed to the revenues during the pandemic. Sources in the Indian Ministry of Finance told Sputnik on condition of anonymity that the government has held discussions on the matter with the banking regulator, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

"The government is likely to offload its stake in the public sector banks in the next one and a half years. However, the government will retain the majority stake at 51 percent and won't sell beyond that", official said. There are twelve state-owned banks in the country at the moment.

NJ Assembly OKs bill allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain professional licenses

“Governor Murphy believes that immigrants are a critical part of the fabric of life in New Jersey, and that they should not face unnecessary barriers as they seek to participate in our society and economy,'' Alyana Alfaro, a Murphy spokeswoman, said prior to the Assembly vote.

It was not clear when the bill would reach Murphy's desk, but it will take effect immediately once it becomes law.

Assemblyman Gary Schaer, (D-Passaic) one of the measure's sponsors, said the COVID-19 pandemic placed demands on health care and essential workers, and that the legislation would address labor shortages in those areas.

“Our immigrant community has been indispensable throughout this crisis," he said. "By lifting this obstacle we can utilize the abilities of every single resident."

Jose Antonio Yepez Ortiz: Powerful Mexico gang leader arrested

Mexican security forces have arrested the leader of the Santa Rosa de Lima gang who spread violence through north-central Mexico and fought a years-long turf battle with another powerful criminal cartel.

Officials in the state of Guanajuato said Jose Antonio Yepez Ortiz, better known by his nickname “El Marro”, which means “The Sledgehammer”, was captured on Sunday along with five other people.

Security forces rescued a kidnapped local businesswoman during the operation and also secured an “arsenal” of weapons, the Guanajuato attorney general’s office said.

Security Minister Alfonso Durazo said Yepez would be taken to the Altiplano penitentiary, a maximum-security prison where drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was housed before he escaped through a tunnel in 2015. Guzman was recaptured in 2016.

Congress to Hold Hearing on ‘Antifa’ Violence

The Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution will hold a congressional hearing Tuesday on violence and criminal acts tied to Antifa.

The committee, chaired by Senator Ted Cruz (R., Texas), will hold a hearing titled “The Right of the People Peaceably to Assemble: Protecting Speech by Stopping Anarchist Violence.”

“Americans have a constitutional right to gather, protest, and otherwise have their voices heard, but they must do so peacefully,” Cruz said in a statement. “Antifa is fundamentally against free-speech and is using peaceful protests as a cover and an excuse to engage in violence and other criminal actions.”

Cruz pointed to Portland, where he said self-proclaimed anti-fascist “criminals are trying to burn down the federal courthouse.”

“The hearing will highlight how Antifa and other anarchists are hijacking peaceful protests and engaging in political violence that is not only criminal, but antithetical to the First Amendment,” he added.

Minneapolis Police Department tells residents to “be prepared to give up” to criminals

Amid a surge in violent crime since the killing of George Floyd, including robberies and carjackings, the Minneapolis Police Department has been circulating "robbery prevention tips" for local residents.

Several suggestions include tips like not walking alone, paying attention to surroundings, or carrying less cash. But others have raised eyebrows, such as those advising residents to "be prepared to give up your cell phone and purse/wallet" or "do not argue or fight with the criminal" but "do as they say." Some have accused the city of grooming its citizens to be perfect victims.

Sentencing for gun supplier’s role in San Bernardino terror attack delayed to late October

Enrique Marquez Jr.’s sentencing in federal court for supplying the guns used in the Dec. 15, 2015 terrorist attack in San Bernardino that killed 14 and wounded 22 has been postponed from Aug. 17 to Oct. 23.

Defense attorney John N. Aquilina said in papers that the delay was needed to research and address “significant and multiple issues” regarding briefs he anticipates filing in connection with Marquez’s sentencing.

The government has recommended 25 years in prison for Marquez, 28. He remains in custody.

Federal authorities have said Marquez did not know about the Redlands couple’s plans to open fire on Farook’s co-workers with the San Bernardino County Division of Environmental Health at the Inland Regional Center during a holiday party and training session.

Farook and Malik died later the same day in a shootout with law enforcement. As the massacre was underway, Malik, a native of Pakistan, pledged allegiance to the Middle Eastern terror group known as ISIS via Facebook, authorities have said.

Airport Robbery: Feds Take Over $2 Billion From Travelers Through Asset Forfeiture

For the first time ever, data from the Treasury Department’s forfeiture database has been put through a detailed study regarding airport seizures, thanks for a multi-year legal battle by the Institute for Justice.

Covering 2000 through 2016, the study quantifies just how often DHS agencies have seized currency at airports—and just how much currency has flowed into the federal government’s coffers as a result.

Any idea how many shots you get when going overseas

Vaccines for Military Members

Vaccines are an important part of protecting your health and making sure you’re able to serve.

That’s because you may be more likely to live in close quarters with others and travel to certain countries where you could eat contaminated (unclean) food or water or be bitten by an infected mosquito. These are just a few of the things that can put you at increased risk for serious, vaccine-preventable diseases.

As a member of the military, you’ll get vaccines when you enter basic training and before you deploy to protect you from serious diseases. Vaccines are a safe and effective way to stay healthy and help protect your fellow military members, your family, and your community.
