Not buying the whole story as postulated, but the SS was driving this vehicle and riding on the inside, too. So, I don't think your objection carries much weight.

M1 carbine. One of the finest shooting arms I have ever shouldered. Perfectly powered for its assigned role and when I bring it to shoulder and lay my head over on the stock … it's ON THE TARGET. Only known remaining supply of original GI issue in any appreciable quantity is buried in cosmoline in storage in S. Korea.

They should, in my opinion, be repatriated.

You can buy brand new reproductions. There are even some recent repros Inland (GM) actions, but I would prefer to have one with a decent barrel but a little history behind it. The one I held (a friend's brother had brought it back from WW2) was made Singer - the sewing machine company. IBM and Rockola made them, too.

Ammunition made at the time (circa Korean Conflict) is still very usable. I've picked up cases at the range with WCC 1952 head stamps and even earlier.
