Abstract

Impaired cellular energy metabolism is the defining characteristic of nearly all cancer regardless of cellular or tissue origin. The replacement of respiration by fermentation (glycolysis) can be a symptom of cancer and not the cause. Aerobic glycolysis in cancer cells involves elevated glucose uptake with lactic acid production in the presence of oxygen. Warburg recognized that oxygen consumption is not diminished in tumor cells, instead, respiration is altered because glycolysis persists in the presence of oxygen. The uniqueness of the intrinsic property of melanin to dissociate the water molecule, like chlorophyll in plants, through the dissociation of the water molecule, opens a new era in the current landscape of reactive medicine. This means that glucose is the universal precursor of any organic matter of the body, but it cannot provide the energy that its own metabolism requires. The necessary energy, defined as everything that produces any change, our body takes from light through water dissociation. In humans is through melanin, in plants by mean of chlorophyll. Biomarkers of photosynthetic activity of human body can be assessed by enzymatic activities of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, superoxide dismutase; glutathione reductase and glutathione S-transferase. A new study suggests that when some ancient meteorites crash-land on Earth, they bring a dash of extraterrestrial sugar with them.

To be clear, this is not table sugar (sadly, scientists still have no insight into whether aliens prefer their coffee black or sweetened). Rather, in the powdered samples of two ancient, carbon-filled meteorites, astronomers have found traces of several sugars that are key to life — including ribose, the sugary base of RNA (ribonucleic acid).

According to lead study author Yoshihiro Furukawa, this is the first time that these bioessential sugars have been detected in meteorites. The find gives fresh fuel to the idea that the essential building blocks of life on Earth were forged in space, before crash-landing on our young planet billions of years ago, Furukawa said.

"Other important building blocks of life have been found in meteorites previously, including amino acids (components of proteins) and nucleobases (components of DNA and RNA), but sugars have been a missing piece," Furukawa, an associate professor at Tohoku University in Japan, said in a statement.

Abstract:

The use of sarin gas in Syria and the nerve agent VX to assassinate Kim Jong-nam, and ongoing efforts in brain science by both nations and non-state actors (inclusive of a growing community of do-it-yourself/biohacker scientists) prompt renewed interest in the current and near-term possibilities of developing and employing neuroweapons. Discourse at the most recent meeting of Biological, Toxin, and Weapons Convention (BTWC), and ongoing efforts of a Working Group of the European Union Human Brain Project reinforced the need to more rigorously address research and use of weaponizable brain science.

In this briefing, neuroscientist and neuroethicist Dr. James Giordano of Georgetown University Medical Center discusses how new developments in brain science afford potential utility in military, intelligence and warfare operations, addresses implications of neuroweapons, and details the need for improved identification, surveillance, guidance and governance of brain science that can be used in military and warfare applications, and thus pose defined risk and threat to security interests.

Dr. James Giordano is Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Biochemistry, Chief of the Neuroethics Studies Program, and Co-director of the O'Neill-Pellegrino Program in Brain Science and Global Health Law and Policy at the Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC.
