If Earth was created before energy that would mean that matter had no attractive force (energy). Meaning gravity did not exist = no friction of atoms = no heat = no energy,no potential . So light may not mean energy but rather something else.

My follow up: "Light" in the Biblical sense could mean "awareness. All creatures have it, some more than others. You would not want to create any living thing 1st then create the concept of awareness after the fact hence your living creation doesn't fit the definition of living. The ability to respond to an environment no matter how small of a response it might be. Jesus being a carpenter knew a foundation was needed before building the walls, as with God the blue print of the universe would also follow a logical path. Through awareness we learn, gain understanding as far as our senses will allow us to take in data to build on but there must always be that 1st block to build everything else upon . Awareness a concept of perception, "being" if you will. Create the concept/law 1st then the being it goes into. You can add extra stuff later.
KJV has Earth as #2 perhaps God meant "matter". Earth was without form …etc.
It's difficult to be sure. I think the final idea to be inference is that God had a blue print and a plan that was in stages or steps. Translations through time have been put into a language context now in which we see beyond the basic meaning knowing of things ancient man had no understanding or concept of. By default we tend to over think it via critical thinking.
That's the point . It is probably more about what the message means than how the message is written in some context. However ; there are diminishing returns when trying pull out more of a message (meaning) than what is simply there OR not getting it completely due to missing critical elements because of translation errors or other ego driven attributes.
