You're making a lot of assumptions.
More specifically, if you've ever seen an explosive go off underground, you know it throws the earth high into the air.
You can see large chunks of dirt/clay/whatever debris falling, even in the screenshot I provided.
Most of the smoke wouldn't be visible until after the explosion

It's dirt/debris in the air. You can clearly see it.
