The Russian cargo ship Rhosus, which in September 2013 brought 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate to Lebanon, a cargo which is suspected to have triggered the deadly blasts that killed over 100 people in Beirut on Tuesday, was registered in Moldova, officials in Chisinau told BIRN.

The Moldovan authorities confirmed to BIRN on Wednesday that the Rhosus was sailing under a Moldovan flag until it docked in Beirut, where its cargo license was eventually revoked.

โ€œThe Rhosusโ€™s cargo license has been revoked since 2014 after it was detained in Beirut. It has not circulated under the Moldovan flag since then,โ€ said the communication bureau of the Moldovan Naval Authority.

The director of the Moldovan Naval Authority, Igor Zaharia, also confirmed to BIRN that a local Moldovan company handled the papers to register the Rhosus in the name of a foreign company in February 2012 and that the vessel was removed from the national register in February 2014.
