Karen Bass, finalist for Biden VP, eulogized Communist Party USA leader as "friend and mentor" in 2017
Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), who is allegedly on Joe Biden's shortlist of potential presidential running mates, eulogized a top leader of the Communist Party USA as a "friend and mentor" in 2017, Politico reported. Bass praised Oneil Marion Cannon for becoming the "union printer to the left" in Los Angeles by "producing leaflets, journals, and brochures for community groups, activists, and churches." She also lauded Cannon for co-founding a community hub that pursued "interracial and intercultural understanding" and said Cannon even once "belonged to the Independent Progressive Party."
"Oneil was instrumental in supporting my own work as a community organizer early in my life, and without his help my life would have taken a very different path," Bass' transcript reads. "I would like to salute Oneil Cannon for his longstanding commitment to serving and uplifting others, and for a century of fighting to make the world a better place." Omitted from the eulogy, however, was any mention of Cannon's association with the Communist Party USA. A spokesman for Bass downplayed her relationship with Cannon, and during a Monday interview with NBC, Bass stated, "I am not a communist."
