Beijing warns of ‘measures’ If US denies Chinese media visas

China repeated that it would take measures if Washington didn’t renew visas for Chinese journalists working in the U.S., amid questions over whether it will make a tit-for-tat move against American reporters in Hong Kong.

“We learned that relevant Chinese journalists applied for visa extensions but none of them have received a clear reply from the U.S. side,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a daily briefing in Beijing on Thursday, echoing comments he made earlier this week.

“If the U.S. is bent on going down the wrong path, China will take necessary and legitimate measures to defend its interests.”

Speculation over the future visa status of U.S. journalists working in Hong Kong mounted this week following online posts by Global Times editor-in-chief Hu Xijin that a number of Chinese journalists would see their visas expire on Aug. 6, and “none of them” had yet been renewed.

WAREHAM (CBS) – The Eastern Equine Encephalitis risk in Wareham has been upgraded to high after EEE was found in mosquitos there.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health said if found 10 positive mosquito samples that were taken from Carver, Wareham and Canton.

Carver and Middleborough are currently at critical risk for EEE. Kingston, Plympton and Rochester are at high risk. Bridgewater, Halifax, Lakeville, Plymouth, Raynham and Taunton are at moderate risk.

China sentences Canadian to death on drugs charge

A Chinese court has sentenced a Canadian citizen to death on charges of producing the drug ketamine.

A court notice in the city of Guangzhou said Xu Weihong was found guilty after a trial. His alleged accomplice, Wen Guanxiong, was given a life sentence.

No details of the case were disclosed. He is the third Canadian to be sentenced to death in China recently.

Relations between the countries have been tense since the arrest of a Huawei executive in Vancouver in late 2018.

Meng Wanzhou's detention following a request from the United States angered China and soured relations with both Canada and the US.

Local media in Guangzhou in southern China reported that Xu Weihong and Wen Guanxiong began making the drug in October 2016. Police later seized 120kgs (266 pounds) of it from Mr Xu's home and another address, the reports said.

Ketamine is a powerful animal tranquilizer that has become popular as a recreational drug.

China's foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said there was no connection between the case and the current state of China-Canada relations.

"I would like to stress that China's judicial authorities handle the relevant case independently in strict accordance with Chinese law and legal procedures," said Mr Wang. "Death sentences for drug-related crimes that are extremely dangerous will help deter and prevent such crimes."

The president retweeted a post by George Washington University tort law professor Jonathan Turley paraphrasing Yates' testimony.

But since then, the film has spread through the platforms of right-wing influencers like Evans, reaching an audience magnitudes larger than popular conspiracy videos like Plandemic. As of Aug. 5, Out of Shadows has over 20 million views on YouTube alone. It has been translated into a dozen different languages. An attorney for Smith estimated that, between its website and other platforms, the film had been watched “roughly 100 million times.”

Out of Shadows never directly mentions QAnon—the formerly fringe, far-right conspiracy theory whose proponents believe Donald Trump, who has appeared in dozens of films and TV shows, is waging an underground war on Democratic and Hollywood pedophiles—but it traffics in nearly identical material. “It does this really hard job of avoiding QAnon,” said Mike Rains, a QAnon researcher who produces the conspiracy-debunking podcast Poker Politics. One of just five sources who appear in the movie is Liz Crokin, a former tabloid writer-turned-QAnon adherent (“Liz really dialed it back a lot in that movie,” Rains said. “She’s this hardcore QAnon promoter.”) And recently, when another Out of Shadows subject called the conspiracy a “PsyOp” on Twitter, prompting a miniature war among believers, Smith released a statement against his own source.
