'I will not be adjourning the Senate': McConnell scraps recess over stalled aid talks

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Thursday the chamber will be back in session Monday and he would not gavel out for the traditional summer recess. The Kentucky Republican blamed Democrats for failing after two weeks of talks to negotiate a deal on a coronavirus aid package that both parties deem critical for helping the nation cope with the continued outbreak. “A second straight week of political theater from our Democratic colleagues with no result except more pain for families, more uncertainty for workers, and more evidence to suggest that perhaps Democratic leaders were never serious about getting something accomplished in the first place,” McConnell said Thursday morning in a Senate floor speech. Democrats and White House officials have been meeting privately nearly every day for two weeks but have not been able to agree on a compromise between the $1 trillion GOP-authored proposal and the $3.4 trillion package Democrats are now seeking.

The Democrat-controlled House is not in session, but lawmakers could be called back to the Capitol to vote on a package if an agreement is reached. McConnell said he’s not leaving town. “The Senate will be convening on Monday, and I’ll be right here in Washington,” McConnell said. “The House has already skipped town, but the Senate won’t adjourn for August unless and until the Democrats demonstrate they will never let an agreement materialize.” Democrats have yielded little in the talks, offering only to lower their $25 billion demand to bail out the United States Postal Service to $10 billion.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said the two sides remain “trillions” of dollars apart. McConnell’s recess announcement follows a warning by Trump officials that the president will take executive action to provide coronavirus aid if significant movement isn’t made on a bipartisan deal by Friday. “I think we need to see some real compromise on some of the big issues,” Mnuchin said Wednesday. "And if we can reach a compromise on these big issues, I think everything else will fall into place. If we can't reach an agreement on these mitigations, then I don't see us coming to an overall deal. And then, we'll have to look at the president taking actions under his executive authority.”

New York attorney general moves to dissolve National Rifle Association

The state of New York is taking major legal action to dissolve the National Rifle Association. On Thursday, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit, People of the State of New York v. The National Rifle Association, against the gun rights organization, charging them with a string of "fraud and abuse" violations. “The NRA’s influence has been so powerful that the organization went unchecked for decades while top executives funneled millions into their own pockets,” James said in a statement. “The NRA is fraught with fraud and abuse, which is why, today, we seek to dissolve the NRA, because no organization is above the law.” The 169-paged lawsuit details a list of financial misconduct, including alleged instances of using NRA funds for vacations, private jets, and high-priced meals.

James, a Democrat who on Wednesday teased a "major national announcement," held a press conference in New York City to discuss the lawsuit. When asked why the state seeks to dissolve the NRA rather than penalties on the officials charged, James said, “Because the corruption was so broad. And because of the level of waste. And because they have basically destroyed all of the assets of the corporation. It was critically important that one of the causes of actions and one of the remedies that we are seeking is the dissolution of the NRA.”

New York's attorney general isn't the only one to announce legal action against the gun rights group on Thursday. Karl Racine, the attorney general for Washington, D.C., also filed a lawsuit against the the NRA and its charitable organization for “misusing charitable funds to support wasteful spending by the NRA and its executives.” “Charitable organizations function as public trusts—and District law requires them to use their funds to benefit the public, not to support political campaigns, lobbying, or private interests,” Racine said in a statement announcing the lawsuit. “With this lawsuit, we aim to recover donated funds that the NRA Foundation wasted. District nonprofits should be on notice that the Office of the Attorney General will file suit if we find evidence of illegal behavior.” The District of Columbia’s lawsuit seeks to return charitable funds “improperly wasted” on the NRA to the NRA Foundation, an independent charity affiliated with the association, and major changes to the foundation so it “fulfills its charitable purposes.”

Have a feeling this is going to open wide the Clinton Foundation, DOJ's office has been asked to look into this for years. Thinking..an unevenly applied, law doesn't bode well for anyone in this case.

Las Vegas: Over 223K Mail-In Ballots Bounced as ‘Undeliverable’ in Recent Primary Election

More than 223,000 mail-in ballots sent to registered voters in Clark County, Nevada, were bounced as “undeliverable” in the state’s June primary election, newly released data reveals. According to data collected by the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) from the Clark County Election Department, a total of 223,469 mail-in ballots sent to registered voters for the June 9 primary election ended up bouncing as “undeliverable” — 17 percent of the total 1,325,934 mail-in ballots that were sent out in the county. “These numbers show how vote by mail fails,” PILF President J. Christian Adams said in a statement, adding: New proponents of mail balloting don’t often understand how it actually works. States like Oregon and Washington spent many years building their mail voting systems and are notably aggressive with voter list maintenance efforts. Pride in their own systems does not somehow transfer across state lines. Nevada, New York, and others are not and will not be ready for November.

For comparison, in the 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018 general elections, the entire state of Nevada recorded just 5,863 mail-in ballots as “undeliverable.” That data comes from U.S. Election Assistance Commission surveys. The data find that of those “undeliverable” mail ballots, 58 percent were from inactive voters and 42 percent were from active voters. Put another way, 92,337 were listed as Democrats and 53,129 are Republicans. Clark County, which went more than 52 percent for Hillary Clinton in 2016, sent out mail-in ballots to all registered voters for their primary election — unlike other counties, including Washoe, in the state’s northwest corner.

Washoe County sent out a little more than a fifth of the mail-in ballots that Clark County sent for the primary election and saw far fewer “undeliverables,” less than 28,000. Unlike Las Vegas, Reno officials did not send ballots to “inactive” voters. The revelation comes as Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) signed legislation to send mail-in ballots to all active registered voters for the 2020 presidential election. On Wednesday, President Trump said Nevada did not have the election infrastructure to take on such a task as universal mail-in voting. Trump wrote in a post: Nevada has ZERO infrastructure for Mail-In Voting. It will be a corrupt disaster if not ended by the Courts. It will take months, or years, to figure out. Florida has built a great infrastructure, over years, with two great Republican Governors. Florida, send in your Ballots!

Recent data has not shown a compelling public health justification for mail-in voting. In Wisconsin’s April election, only 52 of more than 400,000 voters and poll workers were confirmed to have contracted the Chinese coronavirus. None of those cases were fatal. This equals an infection rate below two-hundredths of one percent.
