NRA files retaliatory lawsuit against New York attorney general
The National Rifle Association is hitting back at the attorney general of New York. The group filed a retaliatory lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday after she announced a lawsuit against the organization aimed at dissolving it. The lawsuit from the NRA, obtained by the Daily Caller, alleges that James charged the organization with a string of "fraud and abuse" violations for political reasons.
The attorney general has accused several of the organization's top executives of financial misconduct. The NRA has denied such allegations and said it cooperated with James's subsequent investigation. "It’s a transparent attempt to score political points and attack the leading voice in opposition to the leftist agenda," said NRA President Carolyn Meadows. "This has been a power grab by a political opportunist — a desperate move that is part of a rank political vendetta." The countersuit also alleges that the former New York attorney general warned the organization that the office was being pressured to act against the NRA for political reasons.
