Ohio governor tests positive for coronavirus, then tests negative

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced on Thursday he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus, prompting him to bow out of a meeting in Cleveland with U.S. President Donald Trump, but the governor said hours later that a second test came back negative.

DeWine, 73, a Republican, said he underwent a diagnostic screening for the coronavirus as part of a safety protocol ahead of an appearance he was scheduled to make with Trump before the president’s visit to a Whirlpool Corp (WHR.N) washing-machine factory.

Top Figure In Modern Judaism Dies In Israel

Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, credited with having made Jewish sacred texts accessible to the general public, died Friday in Jerusalem at the age of 83, to tributes from Israeli leaders.

Steinsaltz devoted more than four decades to translating the Talmud, the central text of Judaism, from Babylonian to modern Hebrew, a 25-volume work of reference, as well as being a prolific author himself.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid tribute to an "immense scholar, genius of the Torah and man of exceptional spirit", while President Reuven Rivlin said Steinsaltz had "enabled the people of Israel to access the Talmud in clear and accessible Hebrew".

He was hailed by an Israeli historian as a "once-in-a-millennium scholar", in the words of Time magazine, for a lifetime of work for which he was awarded the prestigious Israel Prize.

Although he suffered a stroke in 2016 that made him lose his speech, Steinsaltz kept on working. Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek hospital said he died of an illness, without elaborating.

Tennis coach ‘Daddy Lover’ convicted of trying to lure child online for sex

A former youth tennis coach who prosecutors say dubbed himself “Daddy Lover” was convicted of a sex crime involving a child and now will be required to register as a sex offender.

In Kentucky’s first jury trial since the coronavirus pandemic shut down courts locally and across the nation, Kenton County jurors deliberated only 20 minutes finding Timothy Mitchell of Mount Airy guilty of a felony charge of unlawful use of an electronic device to procure a minor for sex.

“These cases are a priority in Kenton County and it’s a good reminder that protecting our children is job #1!” said Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders.

The jury recommended Mitchell serve 2.5 years in prison.

Kenton County Circuit Court Judge Patricia Summe is expected to formally sentence him next month.

PHOENIX (AP) — An incomplete tunnel found stretching from Arizona to Mexico appears to be “the most sophisticated tunnel in U.S. history,” authorities said.

The tunnel intended for smuggling ran from San Luis, Arizona, to a Mexican neighborhood and had a ventilation system, water lines, electrical wiring, a rail system and extensive reinforcement, federal officials said Thursday.

“This appears to be the most sophisticated tunnel in U.S. history, and certainly the most sophisticated I’ve seen in my career,” said Carl E. Landrum, acting chief patrol agent with the Border Patrol’s Yuma Sector.

Homeland Security Investigations found the tunnel in late July. A camera was sent 25 feet (7.6 meters) underground after federal agents discovered a sinkhole in the area of a tunnel investigation, authorities said.

Photos show the tunnel measured 3 feet (about 1 meter) wide and 4 feet (1.2 meters) high, according to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement news release.

China has sentenced a fourth Canadian citizen to death on drug charges in less than two years following a sharp downturn in ties over the arrest of an executive of Chinese tech giant Huawei.

Ye Jianhui was sentenced Friday by the Foshan Municipal Intermediate Court in the southern province of Guangdong. Ye had been found guilty of manufacturing and transporting drugs, the court said in a brief statement.

Another suspect in the case was also given the death penalty and four others sentenced to between seven years and life in prison. Death sentences are automatically referred to China’s highest court for review.
