"Hong Kong's government has reacted sharply to the latest US sanctions imposed on the territory's leader and 10 other high-ranking officials, including some from the mainland. The administration of US President Donald Trump announced the sanctions on Friday to freeze assets in the country belonging to Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and other officials from China and the territory.

The Hong Kong government issued a statement on Saturday, calling the latest US government measure "shameless and despicable" and saying it represents blatant and barbaric interference in the internal affairs of China.

The statement says that "the escalating violence, anarchy and social chaos last June obviously required police to fulfill their statutory duty to take lawful measures to maintain public order and public safety." It says "this is no different to the solemn duty and responsibility of any police force in the world."
