Trump signs executive order to provide $400 a week in extra unemployment benefits, defer payroll tax

President Donald Trump acted to break a stalemate with congressional Democrats on Saturday by signing an executive order he says would give millions of unemployed workers an extra $400 a week in benefits.

Trump split the difference between Senate Republicans’ insistence on $200 payments and the House Democratic bill that extended the existing $600 benefit through Jan. 31, 2021.

Vote-by-mail worries: A 'leaky pipeline' in many states

BOSTON — Brace yourself for what's expected to be the first U.S. presidential election conducted mostly by mail. It's likely to be a wild ride.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, voting by mail in a contactless and socially distant way seems like a no-brainer. States have made the option widely available — only 10 now require voters to provide an excuse beyond fear of COVID-19 when requesting a ballot by mail — and some three in four Americans are expected to embrace the option for the Nov. 3 presidential election, up from one in four in the 2018 contest.

Fort Hood Commander's Transfer on Hold Amid Investigations

WASHINGTON (AP) — Army leaders have delayed the planned transfer of the Fort Hood commander, as a team of independent investigators heads to the base to determine whether leadership failures contributed to the murder of a soldier earlier this year, and several other deaths.

Maj. Gen. Scott Efflandt, commander of Fort Hood, Texas, was slated to go to Fort Bliss, which is near El Paso, and take over leadership of the 1st Armored Division. Command of a division is a key step in an Army officer's career. The Army said in a statement Friday that he will now stay at Fort Hood, as Army leaders consider whether there were systemic problems at the base, and who should be held accountable.
