Rebecca O' Donnell pleads guilty to murdering former senator Linda Collins

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — Rebecca O'Donnell, who was arrested last year on suspicion of killing former Arkansas State Senator Linda Collins, has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse on Thursday.

O'Donnell accepted a plea deal in the stabbing death of Collins in Randolph County court on Thursday.

"I went to Linda's house and I intentionally killed her and then hid the body," O'Donnell told the judge.

Collins was found dead at her home in Pocahontas on June 4. O'Donnell, who worked for Collins, was arrested 10 days later. She was sentenced to 40 years for first-degree murder and 3 years for abuse of a corpse in Randolph County.

O'Donnell was stealing money from the senator and when she was confronted about it she "snapped," according to a statement made by Collins' son on Thursday. He was reportedly the one who found Collins' body covered in maggots, under a tarp, wrapped in an old comforter that he said was his.

"The last memory of her that I have was of me making the 911 call and trying not to vomit all over at the sight and smell of my mother's body," he said in the statement. "The plea deal is not what my first choice would have been, but at least we have a guaranteed amount of time that she will be imprisoned for."

He said his family will argue against her release at her parole hearings.

"Today our family has found swift justice by way of a plea deal," Collins' daughter said in a separate statement. "No amount of punishment will ever fill that void that Rebecca O'Donnell made in our lives the day she killed our mother. Today we find some shred of peace that O'Donnell will be put away in prison for a very long time, unable to hurt anyone else."

Both siblings thanked local law enforcement and the Arkansas State Police for their work on the investigation.

On Thursday, O'Donnell also pleaded "No Contest" to two counts of solicitation to commit capital murder in Jackson County. She was accused of trying to hire fellow inmates to kill Collins' ex-husband and frame it as a suicide, according to an affidavit.

Prosecutors for the state said on Thursday they have video evidence from inside the Jackson County jail of O'Donnell passing a note to an inmate. The note reportedly contained instructions on what the suicide note should say. The FBI confirmed that it was O'Donnell's handwriting. She was sentenced to 7 years for each one of the solicitation to commit capital murder charges, the sentences will run concurrently.

Collins was a Republican state representative from 2011-2013 and served in the state senate from 2015-2019.

Previously, O'Donnell pleaded not guilty to capital murder, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse. But the state amended the charge on Thursday to first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse.

O'Donnell will serve a total of 50 years in prison and she will be eligible for parole.

NASA to Reexamine Nicknames for Cosmic Objects

Distant cosmic objects such as planets, galaxies, and nebulae are sometimes referred to by the scientific community with unofficial nicknames. As the scientific community works to identify and address systemic discrimination and inequality in all aspects of the field, it has become clear that certain cosmic nicknames are not only insensitive, but can be actively harmful. NASA is examining its use of unofficial terminology for cosmic objects as part of its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

As an initial step, NASA will no longer refer to planetary nebula NGC 2392, the glowing remains of a Sun-like star that is blowing off its outer layers at the end of its life, as the “Eskimo Nebula.” “Eskimo” is widely viewed as a colonial term with a racist history, imposed on the indigenous people of Arctic regions. Most official documents have moved away from its use. NASA will also no longer use the term “Siamese Twins Galaxy” to refer to NGC 4567 and NGC 4568, a pair of spiral galaxies found in the Virgo Galaxy Cluster. Moving forward, NASA will use only the official, International Astronomical Union designations in cases where nicknames are inappropriate.

“I support our ongoing reevaluation of the names by which we refer to astronomical objects,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at Headquarters, Washington. “Our goal is that all names are aligned with our values of diversity and inclusion, and we’ll proactively work with the scientific community to help ensure that. Science is for everyone, and every facet of our work needs to reflect that value.”

Nicknames are often more approachable and public-friendly than official names for cosmic objects, such as Barnard 33, whose nickname "the Horsehead Nebula" invokes its appearance. But often seemingly innocuous nicknames can be harmful and detract from the science.

The Agency will be working with diversity, inclusion, and equity experts in the astronomical and physical sciences to provide guidance and recommendations for other nicknames and terms for review.

"These nicknames and terms may have historical or culture connotations that are objectionable or unwelcoming, and NASA is strongly committed to addressing them," said Stephen T. Shih, Associate Administrator for Diversity and Equal Opportunity at NASA Headquarters. "Science depends on diverse contributions, and benefits everyone, so this means we must make it inclusive.”

CBP Intercepts Counterfeit Driver’s Licenses

DALLAS – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Dallas Fort Worth port of entry have continued to intercept a growing number of counterfeit driver’s licenses hidden within the contents of packages arriving through international cargo.

In the last six months, CBP officers at DFW intercepted nearly 900 counterfeit driver’s licenses that were delivered via international shipping services to the Dallas area. Approximately 2000 fake IDs have been seized over the last 18 months.

When international cargo arrives to the U.S., officers perform an examination. During these examinations, CBP officers have been discovering fraudulent licenses hidden within larger items contained in the packages.

“What is most disconcerting about theses interceptions, besides the volume in which we are experiencing, is the ease in which so many young people freely share their personal information with counterfeiters abroad,” said CBP Port Director Timothy M. Lemaux, Area Port of Dallas. “We’ll continue to collaborate with local law enforcement to educate the public, and anyone who is contemplating purchasing a counterfeit ID online, on the potential dangers of sharing your personal identifiable information with a criminal element.”

In an effort to educate area college students, CBP officers teamed up with local area law enforcement and local universities to bring awareness about the dangers of providing their Personal Identifiable Information online to counterfeiters abroad for the benefit of a “Fake ID.”

“CBP enforces laws and regulations on behalf of more than 40 separate federal agencies and our officers are tasked, trained and given all resources to identify the illicit shipments from the legitimate ones,” said CBP Chief of Cargo Operations Raul Orona. “Thankfully, we’re able to leverage technology in our fight and ensure that the proceeds for these illicit shipments are not possibly funding criminal or terrorist organizations.”

All of the counterfeit driver’s licenses were seized and, depending on the circumstances surrounding the seizure, efforts were made to contact the recipients in an effort to make them aware of the inherent dangers involved in counterfeiting.

It is a flat-out lie that I received the documents from Ukrainians that Democrats keep claiming. And they know it. It is unconscionable that Democrats and the press continue to report it.

It is a flat-out lie that I asked for the CIA to brief our committee and that they refused. We’ve already been briefed repeatedly on these issues, Democrats simply didn’t like what they heard.

Ranking member Peters asked me to arrange an intelligence briefing months ago. We did, and were told there was no new info to brief on.

That wasn’t enough for Dems to use against us, so they continued to push CIA for info to try to derail our investigation. To my knowledge CIA has not responded to THEIR requests.

Our investigation is focused on documents and officials from government agencies and a U.S. Democrat-linked lobbying firm.
