Meet Chris
Christopher Helali was born in Worcester, Massachusetts to immigrant parents. His mother was born in Montreal, Canada of Greek parents who fled after the Greek Civil War and the subsequent persecution of Communists by the right wing government (read more). His father was born in Malayer,Iran, to ethnic Lur and Kurdish parents, and left his homeland in 1979 in the midst of the Iranian Revolution.
With a Greek Orthodox Christian mother and Shia Muslim father, Chris grew up in a household that was diverse in religious traditions, languages, cultures, and ethnicities. This mosaic of identity deepened Christopher’s love for history, religious studies, politics, and philosophy.
Deeply committed to socialism and internationalism, Christopher began his activism in support of the Palestinians during the Second Intifada and against the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq by the Bush administration in 2003.
He is a graduate of the University of San Diego. While there, he, like so many others, joined the military to help pay for school. In 2009, Christopher was awarded the German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency in Gold and graduated the United States Army Airborne School. He was commissioned an officer in the United States Army in 2011.
Upon entering graduate school at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology,Christopher was awarded a China government scholarship to live and study in the People’s Republic of China for two years. He received a Masters in Marxist Philosophy from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, PRC.
While the wars in the Middle East continued to rage as a result of US-NATO imperialism, and with the ever increasing drone strikes, sanctions, and covert operations, Christopher resigned from the US Army due to being a conscientious objector in 2015.
Watching Daesh (ISIS) rapidly grow and expand in Iraq and Syria, Christopher joined the fight against Daesh (ISIS) in 2017 as a member of the International Freedom Battalion under the YPG serving on the front line during the advance to Raqqa.
After leaving Syria, Christopher moved to Vershire, Vermont in 2018. He is currently a graduate student at Dartmouth College and lives with his partner, Amanda, their son, Theodore, and Amanda’s family on their farm. They raise goats, sheep, and chickens and focus on organic and sustainable farming practices.
Christopher is the chair of the Vermont Progressive Party Orange County Committee as well as the Vershire Town Committee of the VPP.
