This is true.
Arab traders that controlled the overland trade routes between the east and west (through what we call the middle east today) learned the base 10 (including the zero) number system from the Indians and brought it to the west (Europe).
It was incorrectly credited to the Arabs for inventing it for a long time because of this.
Saw a really good TV show about it.
Wish I could source it. But it was a while ago.
