There's some archaeological evidence that Mesopotamia is the beginning of the money-changers reign. They put out less money than they required be paid back, then foreclosed on farmland, brought in low-wage labor from the south (Suma = South, Sumarian = Person from the south) to work the farms and thus began the viscous cycle of nation building/destroying we have been living in for the last 6k+ years.

There's a lot more details involved, like the establishment of the feudal system, the "chosen" class, the injection of demoralization, etc… but that about sums it up.
