Secret Service Releases Update On Shooting That Happened Outside White House

The U.S. Secret Service released a statement on the shooting that occurred on Monday afternoon outside the White House, saying that the suspect told authorities that he had a weapon and that he motioned as if he was about to “fire a weapon.”

“At approximately 5:53 PM today, a 51 year old male approached a U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officer who was standing at his post on the comer of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue N.W. near the White House Complex,” the Secret Service said in a statment. “The suspect approached the officer and told the officer he had a weapon. The suspect then turned around, ran aggressively towards the officer, and in a drawing motion, withdrew an object from his clothing. He then crouched into a shooter’s stance as if about to fire a weapon. The Secret Service officer discharged his weapon striking the individual in the torso.”

The aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower is back home — following more than 200 consecutive days at sea.

The Eisenhower and the guided-missile cruiser San Jacinto pulled into Norfolk Naval Station Aug. 9, wrapping up a seven-month tour in which they operated in U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet, the Navy said.

The guided-missile cruiser Vella Gulf, along with destroyers James E. Williams and Truxtun, are close behind and slated to arrive in Norfolk Monday.

The military members were among nine men arrested over the weekend as part of an online child prostitution sting in Texas, Killeen Police said.

Trump signs bill to expand funding, eligibility for housing grants for disabled veterans

President Donald Trump signed a bill into law Saturday to increase funding and access to a grant program that allows certain disabled veterans to modify their homes to meet their physical needs.

The Ryan Kules and Paul Benne Specially Adaptive Housing Improvement Act of 2019, H.R. 3504, updates a Department of Veterans Affairs program that provides money for veterans with certain permanent, service-connected disabilities, with the most common being bilateral amputees and paralyzed veterans. The new law increases the funding available to those veterans from about $85,000 to about $98,000. It also extends the benefit to blind veterans and allows beneficiaries to access the funding up to six times instead of three.
