The 'white America' in that photo wasn't real. That photo is like any episode of Leave it to Beaver, or Father Knows Best, or the Donna Reed Show—very far removed from reality. The main reason why that image is no longer standard or ideal is because it completely ignores what's really happening in the world at large. Even back in those days, not everyone living in America was middle classed, and good looking, and thin, and heterosexual, and Caucasian, and lived in pretty houses with white picket fences in the suburbs. Many were immigrants, non-white, working class and poor people who didn't have access to a lot of things that we all take for granted today. And many of those people were openly discriminated against in many, many ways because of where they came from and because of the color of their skin. The hatred and hostility and mistrust between groups didn't just out of nowhere. It started out with a group of people who considered themselves superior to others and who did their best to keep certain people out of certain schools, places of employment, residential neighborhoods, etc. And they used the existing laws to maintain that advantage for many years until the Civil Rights Movement.
America would have turned out to be a much better place than it is now if people didn't have to almost burn the whole fucking place down just to get basic human rights and not have to worry about people coming to burn their homes down or lynch them just because they look different. The people in that black and white photo still exist in America today but they're not that visible anymore because not enough of them earn enough money today to live the way they might have lived if we were still in the 1950s. Most are now just as poor as the blacks and immigrants whom they despise so much.
Its all perspective. 'White America Was Better?' Better than what exactly? Its those same type of people in that photo who sold out, bankrupted, and destroyed the country and left a pile of shit for their children and grandchildren to inherit. THEY are the reason why we need the storm now.
